CSX is on deck for racing at the Valley on Saturday, tonight installing the exhaust dump.

GTX is getting a new 9.5" converter and headers this month

Duster is sulking in the corner with noisy ring and pinion.

Quick road test- Car feels snappy!

Over the axle pipe sucks, this seems to really make a difference. There is an indent in the floor behind the drivers seat where it fits perfect.

I'm hoping to rip off a 12.60 or better this weekend.

Re: 1987 CSX for SDAC 2015

    Pre-race reports!

    The bad.

It might rain, 80% chance by 4PM. If so I'm still going.
EGT gauge probe died again. Ugh.

    The good.

Made a small 90 pipe that attached to the dump so it blew exhaust from the floor pan and headed out for a road test. Still hitting 21 psi which I thought was low before and being caused by the crimpy bent tailpipe. Ah well, must be the Chinese VSR balanced turbo.

Went back home and popped the hose off the wastegate and headed out again.

HOLY COW JAY! LOOK AT THAT!

Boost gauge pinned itself to the 30 psi mark and the car started breaking up. And then started racing at idle.

Headed back to the garage, gapped the plugs down to .025, popped back on a few hoses that popped off, replaced the light duty tie wraps holding them on with stouter units, reworked the dial-a-boost dash control for more range and headed back out.

25 psi holding steady and flying! Before the EGT died it seemed to indicate its on the rich side so when I get to the track I'll start dialing out fuel in 2 psi increments and watch the mph on the timeslips.

If it doesn't rain I hope to see some good times!

    Gary

And what sort of EGT do you see at 25psi and just before your shifts? And do you have WB O2 readings at that same time?
    Curious.

No wide band on this one Wayne, currently its on the Duster and I'm really tempted to install on the CSX.

She was cold, lower than 1400F.

Just going to go slow at the track tuning, it will be fine.

Doing load up, going to gamble on the weather.

Calibration "187" being installed. Adjusted pumping table closer to the track run "177" and took out additional 2 degrees of timing under hard boost. Will run both 186 and 187 if time permits.

Pass one: 13.6 at 99 mph 2.14 short time

Assumed the track surface would be slippery as heck and bogged it out the hole.

Pass two: 13.3 at 98 mph 1.95 short time

Came out of the hole hyper aggressive (the horn button actually popped out the steering wheel) better but felt something was wrong with car. It just felt "flat" MPH in the 1/8 was ok and close to what it was running at Cecil. Top end I was getting an over boost pop right before the stripe.

Pass three: 14.2 at 95 mph 2.5 short time

Track surface gone to hell in a basket in right lane. Tires went up in flames and peddling did nothing. Went back to pits and checked everything. Cam, timing, distributor timing, vacuum lines, plugs, etc. Nothing wrong. Hooked up the Snap-On brick.

Pass four: 13.5 at 95 mph 2.08 short time

Raced a dragster which was hilarious as I actually killed the driver on the tree and beat them to the end of the track when they had to lift. After shifting into 4th gear I grabbed the brick and took a gander at it while pounding up to the traps and the spark retard was lit like a Christmas tree with 15-20 degrees of timing being sucked out. I just lifted at that point and coasted through the traps..

Now we know why the car felt so flat and lifeless! With 4 gallons of 110 octane, 5 gallons of fresh 93 and a modest spark advance there is no way it was pinging. Plugs were fine, nothing in the breather tank nor was the dipstick popped out.

I either have a hyper sensitive knock sensor or some engine noise is tripping the sensor off.

As tempting as it was to pop the plug off the sensor and go for banzai run I thought it better to load the car on the trailer and head home, it has been a long stressful 24 hours.

Considering pulling the Daytona's Turbo II and 568 from storage and inserting into CSX engine bay.

Re: 1987 CSX for SDAC 2015

Gary, I have a question about popping the plug off the knock sensor. My TC is constantly pulling timing from only 1 of my cylinders (even at idle), verified on an OBDII at SDAC in Memphis. I thought the same thing...pop the plug off and let her rip. When I did that, it actually pulled timing EVERYWHERE according to the OBDII.

    Thoughts?

With no knock sensor input it should pull no timing.

That's what I thought, too. Warren Hall saw it as I was using his scanner. I thought it was strange, too.

When I first got the car it had a broken sensor and a hot calibration, it rattled like a -----.

Re: 1987 CSX for SDAC 2015

CSX has pretty much been slumbering all winter. Several weeks ago I was moving it around the garage and it starting leaving a trail of oil everywhere! This week finally pulled the trans out and changed the rear main seal, input shaft seal and shimmed the shaft end play. Today she got a good bath and the interior was detailed up. Drove it around today having a grand old time.

    Gary

Edit- Pulled "safe" calibration #187 and re-installed track proven #177

Been trying to track down the second oil leak, I think it is from the oil pan which was re-sealed when the pistons and rods were replaced a year or so ago. I'll drop the pan and re-seal just to eliminate it as a possibility.
