    PT GT Exhaust

I'm looking at upgrading the exhaust on my PT and had some questions for you all.

Would I more of a performance boost going to dual exhaust? Or would a single pipe work just as well? What size should I get if I want it to sound a little meaner, but not so loud that I hate it after a while?

Regarding the single vs dual, I have to imagine you're referring to the muffler, in which case I don't think it would make much difference, though I think it looks better!

A freer flowing exhaust will pick things up a bit, but not as much as a computer upgrade, but both would be best, along with a cold air intake...

    Re: PT GT Exhaust

You only have one pipe coming off the turbo so going to dual exhaust wouldn't yield a significant increase in flow. A single large pipe would be sufficient. Generally speaking, the larger the diameter of pipe, the more mellow it sounds. I would suggest a 3" ID pipe, preferably mandrel bent, although 2.5" would also work.

For muffler, there are various options. I am partial to the Dynomax Super Turbo in 3" size. Good sound, flow, without being too loud.

    Re: PT GT Exhaust

I should post you some pics of mine.
3" turbo outlet elbow, 3" downpipe, 3" downpipe back to Dynomax UltraFlo 12" long muffler, 3" outlet. All 304SS, and mandrel bent.

On start up and during idling you can here the turbo whistle through the exhaust.

Make sure your exhaust tip extends out past the rear bumper a bit, or the cabin noise will be more annoying.

I bought the 3" catback system from mandrel exhaust systems or something like that. They had a dual exhaust kit but you loose the spare. I could try to find my old receipt to be sure if you are interested. I might have even made a post about it years ago when i did it.
I could try to look tonight when at work.

I like the dual exhaust look better, too. I just don't know how well it would work with the bumper of the car only having one indentation for exhaust. I'll look into a computer upgrade and a cold air intake. I've heard horrible stories about KN&N filters, what do you suggest?

This. I want to hear the turbo at idle and start up. Did you have yours custom made or did you purchase it from somewhere?

I don't want drone inside the car. That's what I'm trying to stay away from. I listen to podcasts when I drive and that tends to drown out voices more than music.

I'll search for your name and exhaust and see what I find.

    Re: PT GT Exhaust

The exhaust was from a company called mandrel exhaust systems.
    01-08 PT Exhaust tubing kit (304 SS, 3") = $270
    Shipping $25

The 3" turbo outlet elbow and
downpipe were from ebay. (Can't remember how much but they were meant for SRT4) It had a reducer on the end of it, which i cut off since I was going with 3" exhaust. The muffler i bought was the same length as the stocker, but with the 3" having smoother bends, there's a bit less room under the back. So I used a Dynomax UltraFlo 12" long muffler case, 16" overall.

I can try to get a sound clip.
But from the sound of it you might think this is too loud from what you described you want. You could use a different muffler of course.

It's a bit more expensive now. It's $420 for everything from them not including shipping. I put it on my wishlist, but it'll be a little while before I can throw $500 at something that isn't a necessity.

I prefer the look of dual exhaust, but I don't want to get rid of my spare or edit the bumper. Thanks for your help, I'd appreciate a sound clip if you get the chance. I wish my PT was white like yours, the color is the only thing I don't love about mine.

    Re: PT GT Exhaust

I think there was an aftermarket rear bumper facia that had a dual exhaust molded in. Also, if the pt forum is still around it was ptcrew.com but had not been on in years. A stage 1 computer is worthwhile too for a reliable bump in boost and hp.

There's quite a few rear bumper options I've found. My favorite one is this.
    Bumper

I've found one Stage 1 computer, but I can't really find any specs on how much it increases boost and hp. I've also not found a lot of information on cold air intake performance boosts.

I'm going to order the Mopar BOV this weekend for her. I've always wanted one. I'm also going to get a boost gauge and mount it behind the steering wheel on the right side.

You might think we were sharing one brain...
I need to send you some more pics...

I like the mopar bov plate too, but think i opted for a widemouth one from ebay.
The gauge i'm using is a nice small one that i still need to properly mount, but this location works and isn't too in the way. Be mindful of which idiot lights you block. That's why i picked the right side also.

Yours is a bit higher than where I'm planning on putting mine, but it looks good! I want my gauge to show vacuum as well as boost.

Vacuum can be a handy thing to monitor, however since it changes so often it makes for a busy display. But it is helpful on the highway when you want to drive for economy.

Just an update on the Gibson exhaust.
I rode 4 hours in the car, mostly interstate driving,(70-80 mph)
    At 55 there's zero drone
    It was worse at 70-75

Now I've personally run an "Airhog" which everyone says is a K&N ripoff, in the old Escort for 150,000 miles and seen inside the engine both ends. Had a HG failure, redid head, ran the crap out of it for ~7 years, and a cooling system failure cracked the head, so I was back in there. In the first instance, I could file my nails on the hones still, in the second instance 150k later, the hones marks were still there but not so sharp. Oil consumption increased only marginally over 150K from something like a half a pint every 10,000 to half a quart. This was running 0W30 synth initially, but then I switched to 5W20 synthetic, as the 0W30 I was using in the first place went unavailable. So it's not too clear whether the lighter 20W had more to do with a small increase in consumption. Anyway, 150,000 miles of wear on it.

However, this Airhog was different than the same application K&N because the pleats were about double the depth. Which is a complaint with some K&N apps, that they didn't really bother optimising them for perceived non-performance apps, so for some cars they're awesome, in others no better than stock paper. As for "K&N screwed up my MAF" tales, that's complete user error from over oiling. I oiled mine sparingly, and cleaned my MAF yearly and never had issues, no oil splatter in my intake, no dust accumulation in my intake... which can occur by the way with crappy filter seating whichever you're using.

There is a caveat though, some performance professionals have also seen that K&Ns work but have been bemused by the fact that static testing has seen them passing more dust than you'd be comfortable with, but on an engine, no discernible damage due to dust or accumulation occurs. The theory for this discrepancy, is that on an engine induction pulses keep all the small strands of fibre whipping back and forth, thus making the filter somewhat active, because those strands with sticky oil on actually "catch" dust rather than relying on sitting still and waiting for it to hit it. This means though, that they may only be most effective on naturally aspirated engines, because turbos and superchargers may suppress the induction pulses that make these filters effective.

So there's a lot of BS thrown around about K&N types of filters, but most of it is due to paranoia (OMG if they were any good they'd be fitted from factory, you'll assplode your car!!!) or misuse rather than actually informed experience. I may be getting one for my Town and Country, but having had such a good experience with the airhog specifically, I may try to find a new old stock one of those first, they are out of production unfortunately.
