2 wire to 3 wire speed distance sensor upgrade

So I purchased the parts to do this: http://www.minimopar.net/speedsensor.html I plan on simply splicing the 3-pin connector on and replacing the sensor since my car already has an electronic speedometer.

RockAuto actually has the sensor available with the proper pigtail packaged with it. https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=930607

    Two questions:

    1. In Russ' writeup, he says you can use 5V or 8V to power the new sensor. Does anybody have a 1993+ FSM that could tell me how it was done originally? Was it 5V or 8V? I'd like to stick with the way Ma Mopar intended.

    2. I didn't see any prior threads about doing this. Has anyone done it successfully? Any long-term experiences out there?

Lasts longer/better reliability supposedly. I think the best benefit of the 3 wire unit is that by forced default it comes with an upgraded connector that once (properly) installed should eliminate the problems of intermittent/inoperative connectivity from moisture intrusion for a very long time.

I did this on my Omni when the sensor went flaky. Benefits include the sensor being in stock at the parts store and it being (at the time) ten dollars cheaper than the normal sensor. So far no problems with the sensor.

Pretty sure it works fine on 12v. My duster only has 12v and everything is wired like that. Distributor wants 8 and I give it 12 as well.

Re: 2 wire to 3 wire speed distance sensor upgrade

So far I've owned 3 cars with 520/555's in them, and every one of them had issues with the speed sensor. I've changed gears, I've changed sensors, I've re-ran wires. Replacing the mechanical sensor with the hall-effect sensor is about the only thing I haven't tried. I know it's not in the cluster because my 12-button navigator stops too.

Brent, when you're talking about 12V, I'm assuming you mean to the distributor pickup? Are the V6 ones the same as the 4-cylinder?

Why supply it with 12v when the appropriate 8v supply (orange wire) is right there for using?

Agreed. That was part of my original post. I'll likely wire it back to the splice where the two HEP 8 volt supply wires join together. I was more just curious about the V6 pickups since I have very limited experience with the 3.0L.

Re: 2 wire to 3 wire speed distance sensor upgrade

Finally got around to doing it. Everything seems to be working fine. I spliced into the 8V supply about 8" forward of the splice where the two distributor pickup feeds come from. Double heat shrink on that sucker!

The Wells sensor not only comes with the proper pigtail, but the three wires are the proper color codes, so there's no wondering if you've got your pinout correct. On top of that, they give you 3 pieces of the good heat shrink with the adhesive lining to make 3 nice weatherproof splices. Seems like a pretty nice part for $15.
