    SRT T850 vs the 568?

Would there be any advantage of using the 850 with our van/cars? Some mods to mount it would be required and the starter moved but is it a better trans? One of the reasons I was thinking about one is the price has come down, you can find units with the Quaife for $600.

Re: SRT T850 vs the 568?

I heard some parts for the T850 were either discontinued or hard to come by. So are parts for the 568. So it might not be worth the modifications to make a T850 work if parts are equally hard to come by. Also the T850 is operated by a hydraulic slave cylinder which would need more modification.

I actually have the whole slave and master setup, got it from Will Martin before he left for the USA. Might be worth it just to get the OBX LSD and go that route.

I would be interested to see if any of the internals can be made to work...especially if they are wear items that we need. I kinda doubt it because it's a totally different design, but you never know...

You would swap out a Quaife (sp) for an OBX?

No, I either use a Quaife in the 568 and modify it per Lengel and modify some SRT axles, or do the OBX thing and 555 gears, or do the T850 thing.

You have to throw away the input shaft on the T850 so its not a $600 transmission. Input shaft breaks even on stock cars with grip.

I agree, i think the input shaft thing is the single biggest downfall. I dont see it being worth all the other mods unless you know you're going to upgrade that from the get-go.

Dont push the red button. You hear me?

Input shaft breakage, pivot fork wearing out (even with a stock clutch), stupid 3rd gear problems...

How much power do you plan on making? The T350HD has found its way into cars north of 350hp with nothing more than a beefed up clutch and an OBX. They're cheap, they're everywhere, you've got a choice for final drive (3.55 vs 3.94), choice of 5th gear (.72 vs .81), you've got your starter up front, and they're new enough where plenty of parts are out there.

I see that BUT this won't be a dedicated drag van, its a play van with drag racing a few times a month. I am building another van for strictly drag racing and the auto out of this will go into Mini Me,

Or I could put my TIII powertrain into the drag van and go back to a lightly modded 8 valve for the fun van, hmmmmm.

Re: SRT T850 vs the 568?

I wouldn't go near a 5 speed for what you're looking to do. In order to handle the power / weight combo you're looking at, you'll need a very aggressive clutch and that WILL equal broken bits on a regular basis as well as taking much of the fun out of driving it even if it is a "play van". Auto is the only thing I'd use for your plans.
