Tell me the difference in these pistons.

    Ok,
The piston with the rod still attached came out of my non common block. The piston on the left came out of a GLHS (or supposedly did.cant verify). They are worlds apart in construction .The one the left part # 4387388 .Cant find anything on it.The one on the right part # 4105491.So any clue?[IMG][/IMG]

One is melted but somewhat clean. The other is filthy with oil & debris.

The lighter colored one looks like it may have been from a 2.5L. Looks to me like the pin height is different between the two of them.

The one on the left looks like a 2.5 piston. Can you please show the top?

The piston on the left i destroyed years ago and it was just sitting there. So when i took my current engine apart i naturally became curious. So i did a comparo. The engine i took apart is a standard bore.Well i tried to drop the melted piston down in the bore.Only the crown of the piston will fit.Skirt will not.So i'm thinking ok it's a overbore piston. But i cant find any markings saying it is.And as you can see it's a total different design all together.Kind of interested in what is what.

LOL..But in all seriousness the more i look through things it does look like a 2.5 which means i didnt have what i thought i had back in the day.Might explain me constantly blowing off the tires also..Who the heck knows.

    Yeah, I'm 99.99% sure that's a 2.5 TI piston.

Re: Tell me the difference in these pistons.

Looks like a TBI 2.5 piston. The dish doesn't look very deep or it could be the pic, then the wrist pin is so close to the oil ring and finally, the 1st ring sits up higher than the 2.2 piston.

I didn't know back in the day but installed a supposed 2.5 turbo short block, didn't really check it over, it came out of a turbo van, but holy hell, 12 psi pulled like a freight train but couldn't figure out why it was detonating so bad. After I melted it, took it apart and actually looked at the pistons and yep, it was a TBI.

Yeah. This piston has been sitting around for about 20 yrs.It just sparked my interest.Being a young kid at the time i didn't really pay attention to anything. All i knew was it felt fast and i wanted it.Was told it was a 2.2 out of a GLHS.Never really thought any more about and the car has been long gone.It ran with 14psi for as long as i had it and i beat it like a 20 year old kid would.I cant believe it held up that long.Might explain my traction problem too.

20 years, damn. You just never know what people swap in. Another story, someone tracked me down as they needed parts for their 87 Daytona. No one could get the right parts, turned out, someone had put a 2.5 CB in it. No wonder the kid blew it up.
