Ok this is the third time im trying to submit this text.Losing my cool.In short.I know the car overheated.Has a 782 head. Was a reman head but has roller get up in it.I have to replace the head. There is alot more cracks and so forth. What head should i replace it with? What should i stay away from.Engine will be modded on a low budget.I have 3 bar map,non-log one piece, ported exhaust manifold,255 walbro, front mount,Stock Garrett,2.5 swing valve socketed LM,and a bunch of other stuff.I'll be back with more info.In the middle of another project.Thanks.

Those are indeed some ugly intake valves. I've never seen that kind of damage before. I would use a regular old 782 turbo head with the standard size cam bores and call it a day. Try to stay away from the Chinese castings, you'll want to ensure it has the Chrysler Pentastar on the front of the head.

Ok cool.I was on a 20 year hiatus .Thanks to a co-worker and a board member here i am now back in action in the turbo dodge world.I started working for the dodge dealer in 1990 and got hooked on these little rockets.I picked up a 86 GLHT,then a 86 shelby charger and then an 87 shelby charger that Mike DeMoss was messing with back in the Wally's Conoco days.So now i guess here we go again. This is a project for my son and i.Please explain the issues with cam bore sizing?

A good replacement 782 head should be easy to find. Post in the parts wanted sections on this forum.

The stock turbo cams work fine unless you are trying to build a ton of horse power.

The type of cam you run will be dictated by the head you get. 1987 and older heads used slider cams, 1988 and newer used roller cams. You can swap a roller cam into a slider head, but not a slider into a roller due to oiling changes made in 1988.

..Yeah i've done quite a bit of studying. That's what shocked me.I opened it up planning on seeing a slider cam and got roller.Small bonus for the abuse this little engine has seen.Looks like its getting rings and bearings also.

Junk the head and find/buy a turbo head.

There are a few heads out there with oversized cam journals from the factory, and the cams are oversize as well. IIRC there is a stamping on the passenger end of the head designating it as oversize. I found out the hard way that I shouldn't just assume that they are rare enough I would never run across one when I visited the salvage yard several years back.

    Re: Ugly cylinder head.Opinions?

Typical stampings on the rear of the head are:

T.S. : Tapered shroud, used on all 1986 and newer turbo heads.
C.D. : Cross drilled, first used on 1987 T-II engines ( 88-89) as well and all 1989 and newer Turbo engines along with cross drilled block.

Finally, OSJ, Over Size Cam journals. Rare but out there as stated above. Not as bad if you get the matching cam.

If you get a chance to check your head and let us know. I'm guessing you don't have any of the above.

    Thanks
    Randy

Not to get too off topic, but I have seen one of our heads with actual bearing shells in the cam journals on the head just like crank/rod bearings. I am pretty sure it was an OSJ, but I've never seen another one.

Those are an aftermarket creation to fix damaged heads. Last I checked rock auto still lists them but I imagine they are a very slow seller since 8v heads 'back in the day' and even now are still relatively easy/inexpensive to come across vs the cost of machining and fitting bearing shells.
