    41TE/a604 towing and general questions

    1991 model here
    just wondering what gear i should be using while towing, ive read keep the selector in 3 but just wanted to confirm
    driving around town 3 or OD ? not sure whats better on gas/ better for the trans. but 3 seems to let it rev a little higher and more engine braking so i generally use od

    With the Ford Taurus 3.8 I tow in D to lockout overdrive. Otherwise I would be constantly shifting out of 4th gear every time I hit the throttle.

    If its hunting between third and fourth then keep it in third. Otherwise let it upshift, no reason to keep the engine wound out if it can maintain speed without constant downshift.

    Definitely third.
    1991 is before any ground breaking "grade-hunting" logic to keep the transmission from hunting between gears.
    Additionally, the 'manual' third position typically comes with a more aggressive TC LU schedule.
    This is a significant factor in keeping temperatures down in the transmission.

    ok thanks for the information, will use 3rd and shift into overdrive only when conditions require 4th gear. what would you say the limits are for these transmissions as far as trailer weight ? alredy upgraded to an external f150 trans cooler and use the full synthetic atf +4
