Scored an exhaust for the Omni. Went to Mopars at Red Barns today. There was very little in the way of TM parts in the swap (I may very well have had the most parts on display). But, I did come across this jem:
2-1/2" full stainless exhaust, custom fit for an Omni and fully TIG welded and ground. The flange is in the wrong spot; looks like it was setup for a custom downpipe. The guy that had it said it came off a Lotus-headed GLHS. Someone named Ken? Anyone know who that was?
Anyway, for $50, I couldn't pass it up. I can change the flange. Or build a downpipe to fit. I do have outlet flanges for my Mitsu turbos...

Stainlesss, eh? Good stuff.
Dont push the red button. You hear me?
Looks like lots of seat time went into welding up that exhaust. Hope it was back purged.
Looks like it to me. Nice smooth welds on the backside.

Did some work on the pistons today. Got the last one off the LW rod. I was looking at the valve reliefs and didn't really like what I saw...
Pretty sharp edges there. I should take my Dremel to them.
That's better.
What use is a bead blast cabinet if you can't use it for engine parts?
And, finally, after nice hot soapy bath. Did the other 3, too.
Worked on the small end of the HD rods a little bit last night. Mostly just seeing what I could do with the bench sander. Using the 6" disk sander on the end.
Here's where I started. There's really a lot of metal up there compared to a T2 rod.
Just stared on the first corner. Didn't really even finish yet. This took out 2g. I want to take it down maybe 1mm more; then match the other side.
So, figure another 1g on this corner, plus 3g from the other side, and maybe a little off the top. This one started at 685.5g. I think I can get them all below 680g. I have no particular reason for lightening these, other than I can.
Also noticed this for the first time. I know Brian mentioned they had been re-sized, but I didn't realize they had good bolts added.

I was grinding on the pistons last night a little, trying to balance them only. They're all in the 449-451g range. But, I thought I could get them to within a half gram of each other easily. I was wrong. First, I took off a bunch of casting flash that was present; just to get rid of sharp edges, corners, etc. Mostly to keep from cutting myself (they had some really sharp edges at the parting lines).
I did a calculation and it seems that aluminum is 370mm3/gram. That seems like quite a bit of material to remove to balance these pistons. I was grinding the inside of the skirts, and it didn't seem to have much effect. I think I got the heaviest piston from 451.7 to 451.2 or something like that. The skirts are plenty thick enough, the small sanding drum for the Dremel just doesn't take off enough. I need to find a carbide burr, I think...
Building my own rod scale...
Finished with the weight reduction on the rods today. Got them down to 674g or so; before balancing the end-to-end weights. These started at 687g each. So, 13g lighter. My lightened race prepped T2 rods come in at 702g each. The LW rods that came off the pistons were 651g, for reference.
Any shot or rotary peening to be done to the rods? Pics of the weight removal on rods?
I would have a hard time talking myself into that much balancing when stock pistons are a lot easier to lose your time investment on. Oh the joy's of indexed racing competition. Gonna get the crank balanced?
