    Eliminating exhaust drone

Was cruising the Internet looking for a solution to my extremely loud jeep liberty when I stumbled on a supposed way of eliminating drone by welding in a capped off length of smaller diameter pipe "tee-Ed" in to the exhaust system.

There is a company called synapse engineering that has a YouTube video talking about this. Someone local had one of these magic devices on kijiji which was only a mandrel bend and a 26" piece of 2" pipe with a cap. He wanted what worked out to almost $6 an inch. What a bargain.

Anyway has anyone ever tried this? Does it actually work?

Heres a link with some actual science:

So basically you are going to do to the exhaust what most current factory air intakes have on them with "silencers".

    Re: Eliminating exhaust drone

So as you've found out the dreaded drone is the WORST on 6cyl motors. My custom dual exhaust on the 3.5 Ecoboost is damned annoying between 1900-2100 right were 75MPH is in 6th. So I generally use 5th instead The dead end cap extensions you've found are well known to the Ecoboost guys however its not just a set length that works for all drone. The best engineered drone eliminators factor in engine displacement, pipe diameter, and the RPM's that the drone is the most annoying. I've been too busy with other projects or just too lazy to fix mine but I've been kicking around the idea for 35K miles or so

This is what one of my neighbors did to his Cummins Dodge - It was very effective.
To tune it, he capped a larger pipe and installed over the tube that came off the exhaust system.
He then slid it to various positions (slide flute) until it hit the resonant frequency and welded it in place.

    Re: Eliminating exhaust drone

Just found it a somewhat interesting concept and the dreaded drone seems something that most everyone deals with if they want a free flowing exhaust. There has been lots of discussion on here about mufflers and drone. If it did actually work it could be a good way to keep that expensive muffler ad not put up with the annoying drone.

As far as the Jeep goes I think my next move is a resonator. Oddly enough at highway speeds its not bad, but just off idle (cruising around town) its insanely annoying. It rattles windows if you get it just right.

I like the adjustable length idea. Makes sense but way too much effort for my Jeep.
