    4 inch exhaust?

Anyone running exhaust larger than 3 inch? I think I've read a few running 4 inch, maybe Shadow and Reeves? Thinking of using it in my shadow. Just not sure if I'll be at the power level for it to be a benefit or a detriment. Also thinking maybe 4 inch downpipe and going back into 3 inch.

I ran a 4" exhaust on my 87 GLHS. I don't see myself running anything smaller than 4" in the future.

    Re: 4 inch exhaust?

I have 4" exhaust on my 89 CSX and love the sound. It makes me want to run it on every car I own. The only way to run it full length on a Shadow is to run 2.5" rear spring/coil-over setup.

It can't hurt to run the largest, shortest straightest exhaust possible on a turbo car.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure how I was going to route it all the way back.

I'll be running 1 3" pipe and 1 2" pipe on my SL. Does that make it 5" exhaust?????

Your pipes' equiv area is around the square root of 20 inches diameter. :P

    Area wise, about 3.6"...

can't imagine a 4" provides any more hp than a 3" for our motors..
would love to see a youtube post of it bouncing off the rev limiter

    Re: 4 inch exhaust?

I run 4" right off the HE351 then it dumps at the lower pass side. (when dump is open) route it back into a complete 3" to the back of the Charger after that.

Biggest reason for going 4" is internal W/G on the Holset. IF I were external I could prob get away with 3" + vent W/G to atmosphere, 3 1/2" + vented W/G for sure. Having said that, I really like the simplicity of the internal W/G on the Holset and the 4" dump

    Re: 4 inch exhaust?

Has anyone built a an aluminum exhaust on here? How much does that expand and contract due to the heat? 4" aluminum would be sweet.

Agreed, and I've been contemplating this, but AFAIK you'd have to leave the DP steel and maybe go AL after that? Most say that AL too close to the turbine exit = meltdown! (but I have no personal experience that can confirm this)

Maybe you could make an exhaust out of this? Don't know if 16 gauge would be too thin.

    Re: 4 inch exhaust?

I believe Brian Slowe built an aluminum exhaust for Carroll's T3 GLHT. Still used a stainless downpipe though.
When the time comes to rebuild my exhaust, I may go aluminum.
My current setup has a 3" downpipe and an external wastegate dump.

For weight, Ti would be the way to go, at least for the DP and probably to about where the cat would normally go, as they need a certain minimum of heat to function properly.

Since Ti is big $$, inconel, while not as light, could be run in a thinner gauge, getting close to what Ti/Al could do for you, and is particularly good with high heat.

As for size, the turbo is going to like anything that lowers the resistance exiting the turbine, if you could attach a vacuum to it, it would like it! (within reason of course).

    Re: 4 inch exhaust?

I bought a bunch of 304 stainless 3" mandrel bent tubing that were slightly proud or shy of intended bends by a degree or two. $5 a piece! Some of these were thinner 19 gauge stainless (.043). My point is they were quite a bit lighter than typical 15/16 gauge stainless. How thin do they make 4" in stainless? One would think you could go pretty thin seeing that it isn't going to rust.

There is no such thing as steel that doesn't rust. That's why they call it stain*less* and not stainproof.

I currently have mocked up a 4" from turbo to the stock outlet position on a Glh . Im going to run a modified fuel tank to make up the clearance.
