For now though, I think I'm going to be tuning for economy.

With it being AWD I wanna be sure the viscous coupling isn't dragging any more than necessary. I seem to remember that the front FD is 3.45 and the rear is 3.43 or something?? Might tease tire pressures so "effective" diameter makes rev per mile match.

Heard of some folks making enable/defeat switches for it, will have to look into that.

Re: 3.8/AWD Town and Country Ltd arriving Monday...

Economy and performance do go hand in hand in some areas though, best spark, best breathing, so will check those out early. Thinking I should make sure it's at least a 2.5" exhaust on it front to back, 3.0 was corked with a 2.25, so 3.8 danged sure will be. Also gotta see if I can find a new old stock airhog filter for it.... "similar" to K&N, but they're not as stingy with the material as K&N are on some applications, you get a stock paper filter that's 1.5" deep, and the K&N one is only 3/4, and the pleats spaced nearly half inch. All the airhogs I've seen, you get the full depth same as paper, and you get closer pleat spacing.... and I've liked me them what I has had. This doesn't go for all K&N applications, but for apps not seen as high performance, they can be sucky. I ran an airhog on my Escort, I blew HG when I first got it in 2005, saw the bores, still hone marks, airhog on it since 2005, put 100,000 miles on it personally, no increase in oil consumption (apart from any other thing leaking, like cam seals and valve cover that I had take care of a couple of times) and then it got a cooling system malfunction and cracked head last year, so had to get into it again... hone marks still there, bore seal still great = airhog good for 100,000, personally tested.

Well the "only" set of tires I will buy for it will be snows with good wear rating or those new "four seasons". I should not be putting so many miles on it that I'll have worn those out before the sidewalls rot in 5 years or so.

Try the Michelin X Ice 3s, the only low rolling resistance snow tire on the market, with a 40K wear rating. They work in rain/ snow and run quiet. They are a bit spendy, but worth it IMO.

Re: 3.8/AWD Town and Country Ltd arriving Monday...

Trouble with "low rolling resistance" is that it's a marketing gimmick rather than a real standard. They claim LRR if they knock 0.001 off the previous design. There's been some Kumho standard all seasons with better coefficients than some "eco" "LRR" tires in the past. Likewise there's some tires like the Longtrail T/A that have tested low RR characteristics that aren't really marketed as such. There was a dude won a fuel economy rally on snow tires a few years back, think he had Nokkian snows on, said they were the lowest RR he could find. Anyway, I am going to be digging for data rather than marketing assertions.

Also not real sure I want to risk X-Ice 3s, I've driven on 2s, they do pull you up a bit shorter on ice, but on everything else they feel like a middling all season, with aquaplaning tendencies.

Haha, with the weather you are having, you won't be aquaplaning in the near term.

Re: 3.8/AWD Town and Country Ltd arriving Monday...

When they manage to get enough salt down, there's gobs of slush everywhere, which iffy tires will aquaplane on.

When I looked at it, tires seemed to be at about 70%... and I just realised, they're Yokohama Avid C33, which I think is original equipment tire, so whoever had it had absolutely everything done at Chrysler Dealer... I'll check date code but had impression they were max 3 years old. Hard to say though, might be 5 years old and it's been garaged and not driven much in last 5. Think it's been garaged or under a car port most of the time, 'coz paint (and dash) showed no sign of chalking or fading.

Though as far as weather goes, I'm seeing rain forecast towards end of week, which combined with the snow we've got lying probably means I should rig a snorkel for the thing pronto.

Re: 3.8/AWD Town and Country Ltd arriving Monday...

I thought the rear end had the 3.45 and tcase was still 3.42 like the old models...wouldn't that underrun the rear compared to the front?

I do wonder if its even possible to really get tire diameters matched up perfectly since they are all different from the factory and I don't know how you would accurately measure diameter with weight on the tires plus any growth. Would be fun to experiment with. I think I will need to do that if I ever get my "no coupler" ball rolling.

Probably that's it, relying on foggy memory. Yah forgot about growth, was just gonna find centers and measure to ground. Thinking the rear is under-run because corners.

Is got, drove awesome all the way home, litre per 100km gauge was on 9 most of the way, with -5C temps and crosswind, cruise set to 60. That's 26mpg, not too shabby... also seems to take less gas to climb grades than the smaller cars I've been driving, just went up to 12 on most of the small ones, 15 on the bigger hills, when the rental Accent was going to 15 and 18. So nice torquey motor.

This is also on winter gas, and it also coasts very well, I may not have to mess with anything much.

Re: 3.8/AWD Town and Country Ltd arriving Monday...

I don't know if this makes much sense, but here's my experience with Michelin X-Ice snows and gas mileage. 2009 Hyundai Elantra 5 speed driven from Spokane to Seattle with the factory tires netted 36mpg. A year later the same trip in the winter time with the Michelins netted 40+mpg. Calculated from a fill-up to full right before leaving town both times. I was pretty surprised to be quite honest. I figured a softer snow tire would give worse mileage. The only other thing is the car was only 3-4 months old for the first trip and maybe not quite broken in yet, but 36mpg was right on with EPA estimates.

I've been loving my 99 GC with the 3.8. That engine makes great power and has a nice throaty sound to it. I mostly baby it out of fear of nuking the 183K mile transmission but the power is there when you need it.

Actually, I've heard that 3.8 owners are in better shape for not burning the tranny than 3.3s because it torque limits and pulls timing in shifts.

Yeah these tires suck... 2" down today so far on top of mess we had, annnnd can't tell it's AWD... put $60 gas in it... we'll see how long that lasts, but looks like it might be challenging to get better than 15l/100km, about 16mpg in town... although, with snow thrown towards middle of lanes by tires, it's piling up to where the 4 or 5 inch clearance econoboxes start getting 12-15mpg dragging their bellies, so there's that. I can do the 2000 RPM automatic tranny, pulse and coast momentum hybrid mode when the roads are a bit drier though, have to tease it up to speed today.

Mine is a gas hog in town, I'm happy if it averages above 15mpg. I've only done one long highway trip and it was around 24mpg. So far it's been decent in the snow but I'm very careful, It's only FWD and just has all seasons on it. Thankfully we've had snow on the roads only a couple times this year. I recently saw a similar generation Voyager sitting on TM 15" crab wheels (what my snows are mounted on) and considered trying them on my van if they would bolt on, but the tires are way shorter. I assumed it would have the larger bolt pattern anyway, but the Voyager got me thinking maybe not?

Well the last of the 3.0/A-670s were in 2000, and they all had 5x100 not 5x114ish.

Edit: Maybe the 4 cylinders were 5x100 too? Not sure.

I hadn't thought of the 4cyl model using the smaller pattern, likely engine choice being a base Voyager. Bummer, although I didn't plan on trying it anyway...low rider van would look silly.
