Oh btw, selecting 1 on shifter actually engages some different parts at different pressures than 1 in D... might get it moving if it's having a bad day.

Right...it engages the rear band as well, IIRC, so that it doesn't rely on the sprag (1-way bearing basically) to move. This will take some of the load off of the slipping clutch pack.
Its really about time. I have zero budget for fun right now. Any fun comes out of sleep which counteracts fun.
Very interesting about 1D use. Lucas seems to have made the car much happier, probably could have used it when I bought it. I would be up for adjusting the band though if that won't end the world.

It can continue to improve for a week or so as it cleans stuff up and gets the seals sealing. But after that, that's as good as it gets.
Edit: Oh BTW, don't be surprised if you actually start feeling the TC lockup, lock up now.

Adjusting the band can be done in a few minutes. I know time and money are short, but it might be that the units you have are actually ok. We could pull them down and inspect them then just replace the things that need done. The hardest things that I can remember are getting the transfer gears off and pulling the front pump out.
If it slips in 1st in the D position but doesnt slip in the Low position there's a decent chance the front band is involved and adjusting it may get you something, but if it's because of shrunk seals in the band servo then tightening the band itself will not do much for it.
If you were able to narrow it down to shrunk seals in the band servo you COULD replace those without taking the trans out, but at this age it probably needs them all replaced anyway.
Dont push the red button. You hear me?
And at "this age" mine had worn the brash bushings/washers on the input shaft to nothing, but that could have been lube failure a 40,000 miles previous from burst cooler hose, or due to the metal out in diff, 10,000 miles previous with the experimental ford diff spring mod.

Its not about money here, its about time. I do not like to stimulate the economy, it never trickles back down.
I need some help adjusting the band for now vecause that sounds like "work" and not fun
Slipping on the 1-2 was happening for the last 20k miles (whole time we have owned the car) but the 1st gear takeoff in D only happened one time with me and maybe the night before with my wife driving. Happened on the coldest day we have seen in the past month even though it was much colder a few months ago.
On an actual rebuild I think I want to beef it up enough to handle 350ft/lb or whatever a small turbo 3.0 would make. I don't know if you factor the torque multiplication into that so I fudged that number high. If that includes a new converter then I wouldn't be so excited.

Bent have you adjusted the kickdown band (2nd gear band) yet?
My opinion is if the transmission isnt circulating a bunch of material through the fluid and the converter hub is not worn where it rides on the bushing or seal, then i would reuse the converter. But once it gets junk floating through it you basically cant get it back out, and if the hub surface is not right it will eat pump bushings and leak out the bellhousing.

Sample from the pan may look junky from long term accumulation, so sample from a cooler line may give better picture of what the filter is letting go round or what is falling apart rapidly.
