    Road gear

I'm playing with an '89 Tl 3 spd. automatic behind a Tl 2.5L out of a LeBaron GTC moving a 2250lb Plymouth GT Scamp with 5X100 15s. What is the best top gear that Mother made for that transmission to keep the RPM's down? I'm looking for a highway gear, not a 1320' gear. Something that will make the 500 mile trip to Carlisle in under 8 hours even with a few stops and maybe even a stop for a fast driving award. Thanks for any information, Jer

The .91 transfer gears and 2.86 ring/pinion would really shine on the highway.

The only way to go IMO. I have them in my black Neon and it made a huge difference. I will be installing a set in my NYer very soon and I hope to have a video for everyone.

There's an easier way without even cracking into the trans! What size tires you running on the GTC? 50 Series? GO with some 60's. Slow the wheels down with larger diameter tires. It'll ride plusher too

    Re: Road gear

I've had the .91 2.86 combo in my 89 spirit for at least 5 years if not more. It's the only way to go, with the 2.5 you've got all the torque you need. Cruising at 60 I've gotten a best of 32.5 MPG straight highway and can still spin the tires from a roll leaving a stop sign. With stock tires on the car I'm at 80mph at 3,000 RPM. The #'s listed in the above post will be on the drivers side of the trans just above the pan. For instance my Spirit Trans had4531114. Which was the 1.06 transfer gears and 2.86 ring/pinion. I got the .91 transfer gears from a 89 shadow with 4531084 on it.

Check and see what the number is on the trans in your car. Hopefully you have the 2.86 R/P and a transfer gear swap will be easy.

Thanks to all you Guyz for this valuable information. Seams to be a quorum on transfer gears and that 2.86 Ring and Pinion so I'm on the hunt. And Friend Alan, I'm running 205/60/15s all around on the Scamp and the Tl has been upgraded to Tll. I just want all I can get for those Bonsai runz. Hope every one has had a Great Holiday Season, Jer

    Jer,

That only gives you 6 months to get that purple beast on the road... You gonna make it? Man, July may be a very busy month for me. I really want to try and make Carlisle, and the Gilmore show is two weeks later, plus some where in there is SDAC-25...

It would be really cool to have our two little trucks parked side by side...

I may have to set some priorities...

Greg, Speaking of priorities. Did I tell you I had a friend doing laps between my playpen and his playpen in Lansing to the tune of about 4 pickup loads of what we used to call every tool know to man in my 50 year collection. I wanted to do it for him and myself but now I've been on a buying spree. One of the places I've been buying they even call me Mister or sir or both, What a hoot. I even popped for one of those big 'ole Dawg Bone Creepers and it fits my Butt 'n Back just fine so stay tuned Pal. Red Barn is probably out of the question this year but I'll do all I can to make Carlisle. BTW, Don't wait 'til Memorial Day Weekend to get you room at Carlisle 'cuz you'll be staying in Philadelphia, Jer

If I can make it, I think I have the room situation covered. My folks just bought a real nice RV. I may see if Dad wants to do a road trip in July...

Keeping my fingers crossed for you bud...
