Tool to remove intermediate bearing in case

The last time I removed the intermediate bearing in the case I used a slide hammer and destroyed the bearing. Being cheap like most of us are I decided to make my own puller. It is not pretty but it works great. All you need to make this is a junk intermediate shaft, old snap ring (I used the big one that is used on the intermediate shaft), 1/2"-13 all thread, and random hardware.

The snap ring was welded to the bottom of the bearing race, then the race was cut into two smaller pieces with two nuts welded to the top. The end of the intermediate shaft get cut off and a nut and some all thread welded to it. Here are some pics to give you a better idea on how to build one.

Nice work. I'm glad that I found the tool online for cheap, but if I ever need another that's what I'll do.

Hmm, I had always thought that just side loading the bearing enough to slide it destroys the cage?? Needless to say, I've never saved one

As of today there are less than 5 of those bearings left as NOS inventory.

When they come out they aren't damaged when using the FSM tool. I have no doubt that Lengel's tool will provide the same results.

Thanks! Yeah that miller tool is nice. Really nice if you can one up cheap.

With this home made tool and the miller tool there should be no load on the cage at all. It slips under just the rollers and pull straight up, and the roller are forced in the lip on the outer race pulling it out.

Yeah I got one this past summer when the race walked off the end of the intermediate shaft. I won't tell you how much I paid for it. I ended up putting a used one I got from Jackson and saving the new one.

I was able to pop one out by forcing grease into the plastic retainer that sits behind the bearing. Pack grease in, get a dowel that fits tightly in it, then a quick tap with a hammer. Lather, rinse, and repeat till the bearing comes out. Or make an adapter with a grease gun, and pop it out with a pump or two.

It must not have been a very tight press fit on that one, since all the grease would be pushed out the oil feed passage in the case. Lol! The two that I pulled so far were a tight fit. I have used the grease trick on pilot shaft bushings before, and works good.

Nice work as usual Lengel! Have you made a tool to pull the worn inner races off the end of the I-shaft? I've been cutting slots and using a 3-jaw puller and its not that easy and obviously doesn't save the race

FWIW Timken recommends heating up the inner cone. Every 100F gets you about 0.0006" so a few hundred should make a big difference. Dont use a flame though or the steel will change and its trash.

Thanks JT. Yeah I have a tool designed in my head, that should work great! I'll be making it in the next few weeks.
