'89 Lebaron GTC Coupe NHRA Stocker

Well, it looks like my father-in-law has a trade going (all but a done deal) for the 2nd fastest NHRA FWD stocker in the country (I already have the fastest; my '89 Daytona, in my garage). In it's current state, it's run a fastest of 13.51 in B/FS at a race weight of 3050lbs. Not bad.

It's already a race car, but I'm sure we'll make some changes based on my experience with the Daytona.

More to come, here are some pics of the car as it sat last year. It's originally a California car, so should be rust free. Going to meet up to make the trade on the 13th, weather permitting...

Very cool. Why the one leather seat? I need a set of those seats in that color of 'leather' for my Lancer Shelby. I have a pair in cloth that don't match in there right now.

It's surprising how stock the engine bay looks.

Dont push the red button. You hear me?

I guess it had a power drivers seat and the guy that built the car originally swapped in a manual leather passenger seat to save weight. I'll be looking for a decent manual cloth drivers seat.

    And a non-airbag steering wheel.

The engine was rebuilt ~2010. Which means it's actually fresher than the one in my car which was done in 2007.

I'm curious what the copper tube running across the back of the valve cover is for.

Have you considered just pulling the airbag guts out and replacing them with some spray foam?

Sounds like work. An Autostoned steering wheel is like $40.

Maybe one of those cooling tubes to get exhaust manifold pressure without melting the sensor.

Nice score.. you should tear an eye off of each side so its not a four eyes car!

That's awesome Rob! I sure look forward to seeing you and your father in law w/ the 2 fastest NHRA FWD stockers at Milan next year!
Btw. If you wanted to drop some weight off that rear axle you're welcome to the drum brakes that came off of your winter project axle.

I like it I've been 80mph in the 8th in my 3300lb race weight 2.5 5-spd GTC with a horrible 60ft and street tires, with the auto in that one it should be pretty fast outta the hole and down the track.

We've got a bundle of timeslips in the backseat. I'll have to check what it ran in the 1/8th. It runs 13.50's in the quarter...

130+ timeslips came with the car. Looks like it runs 8.8 @75mph pretty commonly.

Re: '89 Lebaron GTC Coupe NHRA Stocker

First order of business for this car will be ditching the welded diff and installing a limited slip.

I picked up a Phantom Grip from Adam Lengel (thanks Adam!). And I broke out a couple of my spare diffs. One diff has a seized and galled pin, and clearly hasn't had the gears lathed. The other, appears to be in great shape, and has had the gears lathed (I think, anyway; it's different from the trashed diff).

So, the PG will go into the good diff - as soon as I can figure out how to get the pin out.

I also have a set of MP diff savers set aside for this thing.

So do those PG's work good? I was considering using one in my V6 auto car. I know Racer Steve and some others didn't care too much for them.

Re: '89 Lebaron GTC Coupe NHRA Stocker

I have one in my Daytona now. Works OK, but I still get some single wheel spin.

This car is a work in progress. Got to start somewhere, and the welded diff has to go...

I think the less mileage you drive with the steering wheel turned off-center, the less they suck.

Have you already found anything that's new to you as far as modifications for class racing?

Dont push the red button. You hear me?
