To pin or not to pin that is the question

HELLO I am in the process of rebuilding my 94 Duster A 413 TRANs AND I HAVE the cross shaft retaining brackets for the differential pinion gears shaft , which I will be using (THE BRACKETS). SO my question is should I leave out the roll pin that holds the Cross Shaft IN and will it be alright to use the cross shaft with the hole in it with no pin in it ?

Re: To pin or not to pin that is the question

The original pin is slightly shorter than the replacement pin that was designed from the get-go to only use the tabs. When doing the bench mock up I found the amount of back and forth movement unacceptable for my liking so I reinstalled the roll pin so it wasn't free to slide side-side knocking on the tabs.

I always leave out the roll pin when using the brackets.

    Thanks

I left mine out as well and used washers tacked on the ends to retain the pin. I've got about 15,000 on the tranny with no issues so far.

I didn't bother with tack welding.

I am interested in what exactly you mean "washers tacked on the ends" do you mean tacked welded ? then if you have to rebuild just grind the tacks off???? Sounds interesting. NO slop. Do you still use the retainers ??? I don't like slop or flex. I remember a guy from Detroit Jim Lytle owned a drag car named "Big Al" 1934 Ford Tudor he had a V12 Alison engine about 2000 horse He aid "SLOP AND FLEX WAS GOING TO KLL HIM"
I NEVER FORGOT THAT! Get it as tight as you can get it with out burning it up.
