    Auto Trans Fluid Question

I drained the A413 in my '86 New Yorker in late 2011 and installed a new filter and topped it off with ATF+4. I'm going to install another filter, and I'm wondering about fluid, ATF+4 is full synthetic
and I don't see ATF+3 anywhere. I noticed some Castrol ATF for import cars (Honda, Toyota, Nissan) that said in small print on the back that it met the requirements for ATF+3 and ATF+2. Would this be a good choice for an older A413? Anybody running it?

Just use the ATF+4, it's fully compatible with any Dodge automatic transmission and is actually better than ATF+3.

Is it taboo to use synthetic oil with an auto? I've never had a car with an auto and the Lancer does. It's approaching 75K and will eventually need to be serviced.

ATF+4 uses a synthetic base and is approved for use in all Chrysler/Dodge automatic transmission, and is also the recommended service refill for power steering systems. In fact, Mopar doesn't even sell power steering fluid anymore.

I've used Dexron III in all my older A413's. The only reason I use ATF+4 in my van is because I'm racing my van and I brake boost which really heats the hell out of the fluid and ATF+4 is a synthetic which can handle more heat. In my Dad's wagon I run Amsoil only because my Amsoil dealer gave it to me below his cost if I put Amsoil stickers on it. Otherwise it would have gotten Dexron III. If you have the money put in ATF+4. If you want to save money you can use Dexron III.

ATF+4 isn't that expensive if you buy the Supertech brand from Walmart. And to be able to use the ATF+4 label, it has to be synthetic based, and they have to buy additive package from Chrysler.

    Re: Auto Trans Fluid Question

I have read some stuff about the Dexron 6 vs. Dexron 3 viscosity differences, and I wondered if the same thing was going on with the ATF+4? My daughter had the New Yorker for awhile (she needed some wheels going to school) but it seemed to need ATF topping off a few times. Maybe the synthetic is harder to keep sealed up? Anyway, thanks for all the replies, ATF+4 is easier to find, so I'll keep using it.

If your cheap, errr frugal, use Dex III and add some Lubeguard Platinum, turns it to a synthetic type oil, that's what I do on my van, seems to take a beating and doesn't cost an arm and a leg compared to synthetic changes but if its a street trans, and you can get synthetic cheap enough, go for it and don't forget to adjust the bands, inside band to spec, outside band snug then back off 1.5 turns, block the accumulator too,
