Oil pressure warning light stays on during cold starts. Oil filter.

So my oil pressure warning light started staying lit during cold starts. I'm talking 30 seconds of idling and it did it several times out of the blue. No unusual noises or anything but I was getting worried. I swap in a new oil filter and the light goes out after 1 second again as normal.

I read through that thread and a few others the first time it happened. Did like somebody suggested and checked the sender connector. Even changed out the oil before I tried a new filter. The filter swap was what made it normal again, still don't get why. Just wanted to share in case anybody in the same situation is searching the forum. The car never once did that before that filter or after I took it out.

BTW it was a Fram extra guard installed about six months before the light started.

Cut open the FRAM filter and see what cause the blockage.

Fram oil filter fails in antidrainback test...back to back with Wix(carquest) filter ...car is a 1992 Mazda Miata...a garage did my oil change and installed a Fram Toughguard filter...the car ticked badly on startup from lack of oil pressure..

Too late I threw it out. From the miata guy's comment I'm guessing the valve somehow failed. I'll personally be spending that extra dollar for another brand of filter from now on. I just googled "fram low oil pressure" and its a lot of results.

I actually dug through the dumpster to try to get it, but somebody drive-by dumped on our bin and its full. Bin was empty when I thew it in there. I hate that.

Is there a XXL higher flow/capacity filter size that works on these motors? The listed size at my local retailers was only available in Fram.

Depend on how much space you have, you can use a 5.0 filter.

I use MANN W917 for my cars.

Still not sold on the idea behind the extra large filters. Seems like it would be prolonging the time when oil pressure gets to the bearings on startup. If you are worried about the smaller filters getting clogged, then you have bigger problems that it's too late for a larger filter to fix.

Smartest thing you can do is change the oil filter when strange oil pressure things happen.
I've had many oil pressure problems go away just by changing the filter.
Without X RAY glasses, you cant tell what's going inside, unless you cut it open.
I still prefer larger filters for the extra capacity if nothing else, especially on turbo engines where the extra oil might absorb some heat.
However, I still use straight weight oils, and I'm just a Hillbilly according to DJ!!

    Thanks
    Randy .

There is no logical reason to call an Engine a motor.
