Remove the shift knob, remove the the shifter boot, find out what is causing the reverse lock up to stick, and fix the problem?

You'll need to play with cable adjustment. Basically what's probably happening is for the shifter to properly engage 1st gear, it's having to ride far enough over to where the reverse lockout mechanism is hitting its stop.

As for the transmission, that car came factory with an A-555. The 460 would have been a severe downgrade, although I have actually seen an '87 Z with that transmission in it.
