Can't he sure, but I'd guess that it's the bracket for the external pump that was eliminated in a TSB.

No that TSB was for 85/6 only as far as I know. That is interesting though

Mine has it too Adam. Just went and looked.(Not as rusty though). Hehe
It's too far back to be for the fuel pump; the fuel pump bracket is in front of the wheel. It's really the only rusty thing left on the GLHS except for the rear bumper beam. Either way, I'll pull it off, soak it in some rust remover, paint it and reinstall it.
Does that EvapoRust stuff really work as well as the ads claim?
it might be there as a simple way to make the frame rail a little stiffer on the side with the filler neck when it gets ramed by a '74 olds 98
My "85" Shelby Charger has it as well. Bearing in mind that Detroit doesn't put anything on a car that it doesn't need or make them money, I would say that it is there to counteract the bending force of torque. It is right at a bend in the right rear frame rail. I have always been under the impression that torque forces travel from left front to right rear. Assuming that is true, the greatest force would be right at that dogleg in the frame rail.
The only substitute for cubic inches is cubic dollars, how fast can you afford to go?
