Off the wall power steering problem ~~!!!!Mechanic of 60 years stumped~

It''s fine at speed but at idle and not moving there is no power!? It was fine when I bought the car 7 months ago.

It has new Goodrich tires on it. Just had a new pump installed, no leaks after or before.

Can the rack be the problem? Bypassing internally?

    Year, make, model?

Fine at speed? Are you sure? Because manual steering is "fine" at speed as well.

What brand are you getting? I've had good luck with AC Delco and Cardone. Remember, its the same pump as the GM's, unless you have the one with the plastic resevoir.

Napa and advance auto here. Both came unglued and hosed the engine bay.

Wow. Have things gotten that bad? I bought a Cardone one in 2003 and it lasted over 40k miles before the car was parted out. When the shaft seal started leaking in the Charger this spring, I just rebuilt it myself with a kit from Rock Auto.

It looks like we are going to have to do that or talk someone here into doing it. To add insult to injury, nobody stocks it in St. Louis! I leaving for a Route 66 show in Springfield Mo. this morning without the show car! The driveshaft rebuilder in St. Louis stopped rebuilding for the older cars because the PARTS kits are Chinese junk.

You using the spam can steering pump? You can have mine, wont fit when Im done with my car. Cant guarantee its in top new working condition, but it should work for you just fine. The spam cans seem practically bulletproof.

What pump is the cardone then? Is that a ZF style? I have the bracket too if you want to convert it over. Not sure how that would work out for the rack lines though.

Cardone is the company that does the remanufacturing and supplies most major parts stores (including Rock Auto). Their parts often come in large white boxes, some marked with the logo, some not, and are often pre-stained with grease and oil and showing damage from being dropped and/or kicked around by the idiots that work at many major chain parts stores.

Saginaw is the company that originally supplied the pumps to GM and Chrysler, identified by the metal reservoir shaped like an old ham can. They also supplied our tilt steering columns, which is why the rebuild procedure for the '80s GM and Mopar columns is virtually identical.

ZF was the other, much less common supplier for our pumps from '88 to '94(?), including the R/Ts. They are identified by a boxy plastic reservoir and a unique bracket and tensioning system. Personally, I prefer the Saginaw simply because they're so common, and it's very unlikely that you'll accidentally break the metal return tube off the back of the reservoir, like I did with the plastic one on the ZF pump that was on my CSXT. The remanned Saginaws are also about half the price of the ZF units.

Ok. So the cardone reman is the same as the saginaw, just a different name and construction, based on the rebuild at the time. And I didnt think the later ZF pump was the same, as far as I know no one is making them anymore.

did you bleed all the air out of the system?
if you didn't then put the front end up on jack stands, start the engine, make sure the reservoir is full and crank the steering wheel lock to lock about 20 times, while checking to make sure the fluid is still at the full mark every 5 or so times of cycling the wheel lock to lock. sometimes you have to do it more than 20 times, sometimes it only takes a few cycles to bleed all the air out.

make sure your return line is not leaking- it wont leak fluid if there is not a good seal or a pin-hole in the hose, it will suck in air and you will never be able to bleed all the air out of the system and it will howl all day long no matter what you do until the return line is fixed.

You can still get ZF style reman pumps at NAPA. I personally like the ZF pump better since it's more compact and I like the tensioner/bracket assembly better. You do have to watch out for that plastic return nipple breaking though. It also requires a different pressure hose assembly than the Saginaw style pump.
