awd omni srt-4 smoking when under boost

i took the Omni out for a drive
when I get in to boost it will start smoking ( the only thing I did was hook up a oil catch can )
so I pulled off the down pipe it was dry no oil
intercooler pipe had oil in it by the turbo side and in the turbo no oil mad it to the intercooler
so im thinking maybe the turbo seals are bad what you guys think

btw.. i love that car!! wish i could have chatted with carlos (kudos for keeping it going) , and its on my roadmap to build one - picked up gls last year

if hotside is dry .. turbo is good..

but you noticed oil.. so i'd go with rebuilding turbo

else i'd guess rings blow by getting into combustion -- leave it vent to atmosphere

I only put the catch can on because I just had a filter on and i blow a lot of oil all over the place through the filter

Sounds like the compressor-side seal in the turbo failed. Ive only had that happen to me once, but when it did i took the plumbing off the turbo outlet, revved the engine, and held my hand in front of the turbo and it left a slight sheen of oil on my hand. If you have smoke out the tailpipe that oil IS going through your intercooler, but it might not be pooling up or coating it in a way that seems obvious.

You mentioned blowing oil all over the motor through your breather filter. Too much pressure in the crankcase can cause the turbo seals to leak in boost and not out of boost (sounds like what is happening to you). You should consider increasing the flow ability of your crankcase ventilation system before attempting to 'fix' the turbo if it's only doing it under boost.

so ill just get a bigger breather and ad it on to the oil catch can
and go for ride

Try going back to the old breather setup and see if it happens, then you'll know it's the new catch can setup that is causing it.

Well he said that the oil was in his intercooler piping but didn't make it all the way to the intercooler so its just plain ol' blowbye. True, pressurized crankcases will cause turbos to puke out oil but the turbo is not the actual problem. In those situations the turbo will burn off the oil since its only leaking under boost. That means it will be dry.

Puking out oil is another sign of blowbye. He clearly said the old vent setup was bad news for him.

I had decent success going extreme on the venting system but there is only so much you can do about bad ring seal etc.

Do a compression and a leakdown test. take a good picture of the spark plug porcelain.

Um, did you install a catch can with no outlet? I don't understand this post.

Yeah well thats a huge problem :P Engine is pressurizing the crankcase with no where to go.

Compression looks good, though oil in the cylinders can "seal it up" to show better than it is, but I'd start tracing the oil in the intake back to its source.

Could be alot of things at this point.

there is a lil black on them and gray

I did a leak down test everything looks good all test was less en 20% I did each one three times

If you take off the downpipe and get a mirror and light to see the inside of the turbine housing through the turbine blades, it might look "wet" which would indicate its pushing out oil from the seal. Still, most of those leaks that are only under boost are caused by excess crankcase pressure. Both large turbos I have used have had that problem, I rebuilt one of them by myself and it made no difference. Fixing my crankcase issues always helped.

I have had a motor that had terrible blowbye that still made huge power and had fairly even compression and the zero gap rings made leakdowns less useful.
