Where did the metal come from on my a555 magnet see pic

Trans had no issues that I could tell. It's apart so I could install a quaife. This is what I found when I removed the diff cover. I have never torn down a fwd manual trans so I don't know if that is an option. I wouldn't know what to look for. It looks like it was a washer of some sorts. Any help is appreciated. I'm not sure what to do now.

I hate to tell you, but you need to pull the gearset out and inspect the intermediate shaft. There is a large bearing the intermediate shaft rides in next to the diff. The shaft surface that the bearing rollers ride on and/or the bearing rollers themselves have been known to frag. It's becoming more common, probably due to the age of the parts.

The pin for the spiders is loose as could be. I'm thinking the metal is the thrust washers in there, everything is loose in the diff.

That very well could be the case, but I agree you need to check the cluster shaft. That's a LOT of metal in there. I'd rather know now than to install a $1200 differential in a transmission that's got one foot in the grave.

You may need to shim the diff ends when installing the new diff. I know my OBX required a shim or two on each end.
Just a heads up to check that.
