Thread: who is doing intake porting on here?

who is doing intake porting on here?

I have a stock 1 piece blowthrough intake that id like ported out and the tb mount opened to accept a 52mm tb or best case scenario a 58 mm tb. Trying to start my build on this budget motor with as much performance mods done as possible without spending a load. Hate to pull it apart more than once.

No point in machining a 1 piece for a larger T body when it necks down and chokes it off anyway, unless
your going to do what I did

The intake manifold is one of the main areas of the motor where you get a lot of bang for your buck when you actually upgrade it (porting either end of a 1pc when all the problems are in the middle doesnt count as an upgrade, to me).

    Have you considered this?

This is what Crazy1eye and myself did a number of years ago with 1 pc intakes. We made about 12 of these for ourselves and other members. Works great but there is some work involved. Runners are cut down to 6", 2.5" ID mandrel bent inlet, shelf completely removed which gives you a large plenum. The runners are ported before welding.

so it would seem that porting the stock intake is pointless.

Porting the stock 1 piece intake is pointless. Gaboons is what you need to do to a 1 piece at minimum. Asa Cannells custom piece is really nice if you can get some better welding on it IMO. big plenum shorter runners and funneled down ports should really wake these cars up. I'm tempted to pick one up to replace my big plenum 2 piece. or at least pick up the parts from him.

I cant be playing around with power steering pump issues and other modifications for that intake acannel is doing.

Re: who is doing intake porting on here?

In that case i would try to get my hands on a 2pc and a bolt-on plenum upgrade.

The 1pc can be taken from crap to good enough with a lot of grinding and welding. Shadow uses a modded one on his 500whp charger.

The 2pc will show major high rpm gains from replacing the upper portion even with the lower portion remaining stock. However, with a lot of grinding and welding the lower portion can be taken as far as you want to take it. Warren Stramer uses a majorly ported and minorly welded (iirc) 2pc lower on his engine which, although it has never proven it on a track or dyno (but we're not talking about a 3.0 here so Shadow does not mind this ) clearly has the potential to make more power than any currently running 8v motor in the community.

A stock 1pc is a pile of garbage if you ever intend to make power beyond 5000 rpm. If you dont, then it is ok, but i wouldnt waste my time or money porting the ends when most of the problems are in the middle.

Yes pretty much, the stock 1 piece anyway. A stock 2 piece ported with a 52mm TB can make good power. I made over 300whp on one with pump gas.

The ZF pump fits just fine. The TU header required clearancing but I believe it fits a stock manifold just fine. The stock 1 piece rail works too. The only thing you really need to do is make a provision for the knock sensor.

No, it was all cleaned up and sand blasted then runners were ported.
