Arrow Heat Shield on Intake Manifold

    Hey Guys,

So I decided to try something out. 2000*F Insulation mat on the intake manifold. I am also getting a shield that goes around the turbo.

I was just thinking today if I should do something like that...
Anything that keeps the heat soak out of the intake has to be worthwhile.

How does it attach to the intake?

Looks to be self adhesive. I have been thinking about that too.

I used Permatex "The Right Stuff" on the backside. Now I am thinking that it problably won't hold up to the heat even though its on the back side of the mat. Its rated at 500*F.

    What do you guys think?

It shouldn't get to 500 if the mat is any good. Can you cut slits in the mat and clamp it or band it on? I'd like to put a heat shield on my car too. Let us know how it works.

I tried some heat shielding that had the adhesive backing on it and it did not hold up.

Years ago, I was able to sew on some of that sticky insulation mat, up tight, with fine gauge safety wire. Had to drill a few small threading holes into the webs between the runners of the two piece intake manifold. I wanted to make sure the insulation didn't sag onto my waste gate swing valve actuating arm and lever.

Also made a 3/8" thick phenolic spacer to insulate the upper plenum from the hotter lower.

Between those two means of insulation, the mat and the spacer, the upper runs substantially cooler as read by a laser heat gun. Forget how much.

I've seen those blankets/covers that go over the turbo to help hold the heat in. Wondered how well they worked or if they were worht it.

I take it that's just the foil tape they sell to reflect radiant heat?

Yes. Not sure if it makes much of a difference but I figured being directly above the turbo, it couldn't hurt...

I've done this on several 2 piece intakes. Thermotec wrap along with more header wrap layers between the intake and exhaust flange. Sealed the edges with RTV so it wouldn't fray. This particular wrap has been on vehicle for 10+ years. Foil gets a bit crunchy with age, but is holding up fine. Definitely helps.
