    Tranny Locked up

    So as I was driving my van today I shifted from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd, I don't remember now, and it just locked up on me. Shifter is stuck in the middle and will only go down into 2nd or 4th. Can't really tell, I think its second. It wont move left or right at all. The shift links all look good. I've gone pretty long never having to work on a tranny before and knowing very little about them. Looks like that's about to change...

    There is a 555 in there now but I do have a 520 in the garage. These two are interchangeable, right? I know its a bit of a downgrade (well not anymore) but as long as it gets me moving..

    Yes, you can use A520 for A555.

    Make the the problem isn't cable related.

    As stated the problem is most likely cable related. I would check under shifter cover trim piece in the car first.

    I will double check but they looked to be okay. I was able to get it into second to drive it home and it had a super loud whine too it.

    The detent spring thingy and selector rod can break inside the shifter housing.

    I had a roll pin walk out on mine and it did that. The fork stayed in one gear while the rod moved back to neutral then you select another gear and it locks up.

    What did it take to fix it when it happened to you? Like I said I know nothing about them and I'm probably getting in way over my head with this.

    That would require you to fully disassemble it for the most part.

    I took the top cover off, lined up the roll pin hole and tapped it back in. Luckily, it worked its way up instead of down and didn't fall out.

    Okay so it looks like I'm going to try and give this a shot this weekend. I remember seeing steps somewhere before for removing the trans but can't find it now. Is this something I can do in the driveway on jack stands with a buddy? Lost my garage access so I'm stuck outside... Also are the cables the same between the 555 and 520?
