    2.4 New Yorker Alternator

    My brother and I ran into our first issue with my PT Turbo 2.4 swap into my 88 New Yorker. I am using an 06 stratus alternator and accessories. Do the newer style ones operate the same as the TM ones?

    As long as the two field wires are hooked up it shouldn't care what is controlling it. one is key on power, the other one goes to the voltage regulator at the SMEC.

    I have the '98 2.4 N/A Caravan accessories on my '88 SRT-4 Caravan and I was able to wire that alternator to my SMEC.

    With the 05 Stratus alternator, it uses a positive signal with a ground. The SMEC puts out a negative signal. Might have to switch to an earlier style accessory set up and alternator.

    It should still work, according to the wiring diagrams it should still have a a dedicated ground for the field coil at the connector. May want to verify with a meter but the field coil should be isolated from the body.
    As such, pin 2 which is the positive signal would be wired to 12v and the ground side to the SMEC/SBEC.

    Thanks, we will try that. If it does not work, I ordered a voltage regulator from a 60's Dodge that has a positive signal.

    Any reason you wouldn't just use the older alternator? All you need is the Caravan alternator bracket and it bolts right in. The wires face straight out of the engine so you can tie up the harness near the radiator.

    The reason I didn't use an older alternator was because I was using the accessories that I had. It turns out that up until 69, Chrysler used a voltage regulator with a positive output. With that hooked up, the 2.4 charges at a constant 14.4 volts. Here it is installed.
