I was feeling under the intake manifold just to get an idea of the shape and pieces of what looked like fiberglass started coming off. Was there insulation there or is this leftover from a mouse nest?

yes, first gen's had a heat shield between the manifolds, cloth body with metal trim ring. if I remember, they mounted on slotted tabs on the exhaust manifold studs.
Here is what they supposed to look like. Pictured is NOS and low mileage units.

Ok what came off in my hand was whiteish fiberglass like material with remnants of a backing that looked metallic so I guess that was it. I won't pick at it until I take the whole system part someday.Thanks for the replies and pics.
It might have been the starter heat shield.
