    93 IROC R/T - Finally!

OK - I may have posted details about this car when I picked it up many years ago (2005 maybe?), but I can't find a thread with that info so I'll tell the story in this thread.

I had wanted to add an iroc r/t to my collection and once I saw a green iroc r/t with leather interior back in 2003, I set my eyes on that combo. After a couple years of looking, I found one not more than 45 minutes from me! However, based on the ad and pictures, it looked to be in really rough shape. I was skeptical, but since it was so close I figured I had nothing to lose to go and look at it. A few days later I made the trek out there, and as I pulled up, I thought, well, it's sunk in the dirt and missing body parts, but at least what's there doesn't look all rotted out.

The interior was filled with engine and body parts (radiator/intercooler, front fascia pieces including headlights and other parts, etc.), but other than a tare in the drivers seat, it was all there and in not too bad of shape. I looked over the body panels and it was dinged up, but other than a tiny dime sized spot of rot on the bottom lip of the drivers door, there was no rust to be found anywhere on the car.

Then I lifted the hood....woah...what a mess!!! It was packed with leaves and acorns and you could barely see that there was a TIII engine lurking underneath. Gray squirrels had claimed the engine compartment as their home! The owner and I cleared it out and sure enough, it was pretty much all there. The wiring harness was chewed up and the radiator hoses were cut (radiator/intercooler was in the back seat), but it looked salvageable. We inflated the tires and then jacked the car up and I looked underneath and couldn't believe how clean it was for having been sitting in the dirt for the last couple of years. The owner also showed me paperwork and it turns out he picked up the car from the original owner who had dumped the car due to a no start issue. The car had a ton of receipts in the glove box from work done to it in 1997 and many of them listed "no start" on them. This guy had only picked it up because he was planning on taking parts from it for another iroc r/t that he had. However, he never got around to the project and this car sat in his yard for 2 or 3 years before he decided to sell off all of his iroc r/t stuff.

Well, while some called me crazy, I saw the potential so I decided to make an offer. The price we settled on was a little higher than I wanted to pay, but I made the deal with him and came back a week later and dragged the car home. Then it sat for a few years while I worked on other projects.

In 2008 I spent a couple weekends cleaning it up and trying to get it reassembled enough to try and fire up the engine. The wiring harness was so chewed up and even though I had gone through to try to fix every break, I couldn't get the car to fire. Here's the furthest back thread I could find on the car and it talks about the wiring issues: http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/sh...I+sbec+diagram

After unsuccessfully trying to get it to fire, I put the car on the back burner again until about a year later when I had time to swap in a new wiring harness that I had bought. I tested and tried everything and the best I could get out of it was an occasional pop. Here's a thread on that effort: http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/sh...-Problem-HELP!

That was the last straw and the car was pushed into the back corner of the garage for the last 5 years.

This winter I finally decided to just pull the engine and see if there was something freakishly wrong that was causing the no start. I pulled the head and everything looked OK (headgasket was definitely on its way out though). Then I pulled the transmission and bingo!!! I noticed it right away. The pressure plate was too large and was protruding into the reference slots on the flywheel so the crank sensor couldn't get a good signal! I pulled the pressure plate and the clutch was brand spankin new! So the poor car had sat since 1997 due to someone putting the wrong clutch into it...what a shame, but good for me I guess as I now have a 1 owner 73K mile car that I'm sure will fire once I put the correct pressure plate in it!

Anyway, since the car is apart, I decided to go through it and give it the restoration that I always planned for it and that's really the purpose of this thread. I'll post info and pics over the next few days of the progress that I have made so far. I was pumped when I found the pressure plate issue few weeks back as it gave me confidence that this car wasn't possessed...LOL! And now I've been plugging away at it with renewed vigor and confidence!

In my experience Mr Berubi, cars that you own tend to get more than a thorough restoration and rebuild, even if it takes a few years to get there. Looking forward to pictures and updates...

EDIT: looking at the date in the ad photos, it looks like it was 2007 that I picked this car up, so it hasn't been in my stable quite as long as I remembered...LOL!

Here's a couple pics of what I believe was the demise of this poor car:

What a silly reason for this car to have to sit un-running for 17 years...LOL!

Anyway, here's the result of sitting dormant for 17 years with radiator and intercooler hoses disconnected. It's actually probably a good thing I couldn't get this car to start - the coolant passages were all sludged up and the headgasket definitely had a serious oil leak at the back of number 4 and some detonation and water damage on number 1.

All the pistons and rings looked good and the cylinder walls still had nice cross hatching on them. The bearings looked ok, but rod #1 showed some slight wear that concerned me, so I went ahead and bought new rod bearings for it. Other than those bearings and new gaskets, I think that might be all this one needs.

I'm hoping to get the motor all assembled this weekend and then work on cleaning up the engine bay over the next couple of weeks so that I can get this engine installed and see if she'll finally fire back up! I'll post pics as I progress.

    Enjoy!

The nose was off it and the hood was slightly up and that is the result of years of lawn mowing, sloppy leaf blowing and squirrels/mice nesting! I've seen more than one new england vehicle like this, but believe me, my jaw dropped when I lifted the hood on this one...LOL!

I pulled the entire front end off the car (fenders, hood, ground effects, etc) to drop them off at my buddies to start the body work on them, and the entire frame is stuffed with leaves, acorns and jute padding! I'll definitely take some pictures and post them.

87 CSX #141 had it's frame all stuffed up like this when I pulled it apart to paint it too. It was lots of fun cleaning all that out - especially since it was loaded with rodent poo and urine. I'm sure this one will be just as fun

I had some slow downs (as usual), but the engine/trans is back together and ready to drop in. I still have a few accessories, as well as the intake manifold, water pump and a/c bracket to bolt on, but I'll put those on once the motor is back in the car.

As promised, here's a shot of the gunk that was clogging up the frame:

And here's the harness on the work table with spare harnesses in hopes of making one good harness (original harness, spare beat up 93 iroc r/t harness, 92 v6 iroc harness and a 91 spirit RT harness in the box just in case). This will be my night time project this week:

I've got all of the nose pieces all painted and ready to go back on as well. I'm hoping to finish up the wiring harness and get it installed Saturday and then install the drivetrain. Once I have it fired up, I'll reassemble the front end and then start on the interior.

And the bone guy speaks...LOL! I'm thinking the rodents probably dragged it in and were feeding on it. Maybe that's how it got so lodged in there - as they gnawed it down it slid further and further into that little cavity and eventually got lodged in there.

Whatever it caused it, it sure was freaky and nasty pulling it out!

As for the green comment - I'm partially color blind for greens and blues - maybe that's why I think it's the BEST color ever applied to a car! LOL!

This project excites me! This is my #1 favorite IROC R/T (the Electric Blue ones are a very close 2nd). Thanks for saving it...maybe I'll own one like it some day. Until then, I'll enjoy yours vicariously.

    Re: 93 IROC R/T - Finally!

OK - some updates. I got the wiring harness all restored and installed that last week. I also finished putting the motor together and installed that. Then I restored the vacuum harness (that was all rodent chewed as well). Luckily I had a couple partial vacuum harness and I was able to create a like new factory vacuum harness (really happy with the way it came out). The fuel pump was seized so I had to install a new one. Ugh! What a pain that was! The lock ring was completely rusted in there and I destroyed it getting it out. Plus, the tank was nearly full of fuel and I had no way of draining it, so once the lock ring was out, I got a wonderful 17 year old fuel bath...LOL! The amazing thing was, it still smelled like gasoline! Not sure whether fuel back then was more stable, but it definitely was usable. Once I finished with that fun job, the moment of truth came. I turned the key and after a couple seconds of the engine turning over, it fired right up - 17 year old fuel and all!

Lifters were a little noisy, but other than that everything seemed fine (good oil pressure, no smoke or any funny noises). I'm hoping once I drive it a little bit they will quiet down. Here are some pics of the clean up of the engine compartment (this will be more of a driver, so I didn't go too crazy on the engine bay paint) and the motor installed:

I took it for a ride up and down my driveway and it seemed to run fine (could only get into third gear, but 1st, 2nd, 3rd and reverse seemed to work fine). The brakes and steering also seemed fine and I put new bushings in the shifter cables so it shifted pretty good as well. I decided the car deserved to have it's first bath in 17 years. Here's some shots of it after the wash:

Next up is the bodywork and paint. As you probably saw in the earlier pics, the car did not have a nose when I got it. Luckily I worked the red V6 iroc car into the deal and I stole the nose from it for this car. All the front end pieces are painted and ready to install. Next up are the doors and once they're done, the rest of the body will be painted. While there was only a dab of rust on the front lip of the hood, this car is really dinged up and most of the plastic ground effects had cracks and holes in it. So it took a lot of work! Here's some shots of some of the front end pieces:

Luckily, most of the dents and dings were in the front end and doors, so once they're all done, the rest of the body shouldn't be a big deal (there's zero dings in the drivers quarter and the passenger quarter only has one tiny ding in it).

Oh, and for those inquiring minds - I figured out what the GF on the front end means. It became very apparent when I ordered the paint...LOL! GF is the paint code for Emerald Green.

It will probably be a little while before I have any updates, but hopefully sometime in July I'll be assembling everything and then will move onto the restoration of the interior.

Looking pretty good. What did you do about the little bit of corrosion under the battery tray?

I used eastwoods rust converter and then sanded and primed with rust preventive primer before painting.

I had some time on Saturday morning to strip out the interior. Just like everything else on this car, it was a literal rats nest!

Before (with only drivers seat removed - notice the lovely mold and mildew on the door panels and seats...yummie):

Mice chewed some of the foam from the back seat, but luckily it wasn't enough to really damage the seat:

I power washed the carpet and it looks like brand new. I need to treat it with a mold/mildew treatment and then let it sit in the sun for a few days before I reinstall it. The floor looks pretty good, but the bolts in the front footwells have some rust on them (not sure what the bolts are for) so I need to clean those up. I plan on wire wheeling the scaly spots and putting a coat of paint on the floor.

I also removed the door panels and all door trim etc for cleaning and took the doors off for body work and paint. I'm hoping to finish up the floor and doors this weekend and then start on the roof and rest of the body. Like I said before, the quarters are in really good condition so not much needs to be done with them other than a scuff and a quick spray.

If all goes well, by the end of the month, this one will be registered and driving. 17 years in the making!

    Re: 93 IROC R/T - Finally!

Wow! Interesting post Rich! Since the date on that is July of 93 and production of the daytona stopped in March of 93, I'm assuming this was a recall and those bolts were installed by a dealer?

If that's the case, I'm definitely going to try to remove them and clean up the sheet metal around them and install new ones.
