The tires on my 89 Voyager have dry rotted to the point I don't feel safe driving on them (1/4" wide cracks in the tread). I'm looking for new tires and trying to decide what route to go and how wide a tire I can run.
The van is stock ride height and will probably stay that way since it's my parts hauler. It came with crappy 195/75/14 whitewalls.
Current tires/wheels are 215/55/16's on factory 16x6 Lebaron GTC Lace wheels. This combo has served me well for the last 10 years across multiple vans. These tires are slightly shorter than the stock setup with an OD of 25.3" vs 25.5" stock
I can easily go with the same combo above, but I've also got a set Borbet Type-T 16x7.5" wheels sitting here that need a home. They were on my Spirit R/T a few years ago ant they worked ok on that, but the right rear tire would rub the fender lip when the car hit a bump.
If I run the aftermarket wheels on the van I want to avoid the "stretched" look and get some tires that fit. The two sizes I'm considering are 225/55/16 and 245/50/16
I know the 225/55/16's will fit fine, and with an od of 25.7" they are still close enough to a stock diameter.
But I had the crazy thought of going with the 245/50/16's just to have some fat meats on the van, the OD is 25.6" almost the same as stock and the 7.5" wheels will accommodate them fine. Has anyone run tires this wide on a van, if so any issues? Pictures?
