Rack and pinion… its time to end the mystery

Has anyone here actually successfully opened up one of these? More specifically a TRW type.

I know the service manual doesn't tell you anything, because your not supposed to f with it but thats not how we are around here

ordered the plews-edelmann seal kit and its supposed to come with directions. The plastic cap on the bottom of the spool valve vertical portion has me at a stop for now. It is going to come out whether its in once piece or not remains to be seen. The rest looks like the rack bar will be removable once the pinion gear/spool valve has been removed.

all signs are pointing towards the rack having blown out the p-side seal on the Shadow. Went from full power assist to nothing in about 90 seconds and big mess underneath. Before I throw away another $120 on a junk reman I am going to give repairing this one an attempt.

I'm interested in this. I have rebuilt the packing in many hydraulic cylinders over the years and once you get the basics it's super easy to do. I can't see this being much different. Some seals you might have to expand and or make flexible by hot water and so on to aid the process.

The TC by Masi manual has pages and pages on the tear down and reassembly. Maybe Alan can post scan and post them.

I was very happy with the service and turn-around time for the GLH rack & pinion I sent to http://steerandgear.com/

    For whatever that is worth.

Re: Rack and pinion… its time to end the mystery

Parts came in. I need to make a spanner wrench to remove the plastic plug on the bottom of the housing. The seal kit is actually rather complete… scary to say the least. The ball bearing listed on rock auto and elsewhere is actually only the bottom one, the top bearing looks like a conventional RWD axle roller bearing only a lot smaller, made by INA and the part # looks promising to find one.

FTR if anyone has any reservations about purchasing inner tie rod ends I can say this much. The raybestos professionals ones said 'assembled in USA' on the box. taking them out and comparing to known original chrysler/TRW they look very similar in finish/appearance. same for the outer ones as well.

Re: Rack and pinion… its time to end the mystery

Is there anything inside there that looks like a socket for a 4WD spindle or a spanner type wrench?

Re: Rack and pinion… its time to end the mystery

My 1987 Service manual has a pretty good section on rack disassembly/assembly. 1990 does not.

    Thanks

Re: Rack and pinion… its time to end the mystery

I am thinking when chrysler changed over from Saginaw to TRW steering racks, which would be around that time frame the decision was made to make them non serviceable at the end user/end servicer level for whatever reason. The kit from edelmann lists 88 through 98 model years as what it services.

The 1987 manual covers both Saginaw and TRW.

    Thanks

If you run out of options, Accudrive and A1 Driveshaft are local.

Re: Rack and pinion… its time to end the mystery

I rebuilt the one in my Scamp many years ago. The seals on the pinion shaft had dried up and shrunk. I could literally pour fluid in the pump and watch it run out the rack! As I remember, it wasn't all that tough to do. But that has been close to 14 years ago, I've slept since then...

Good luck with the rebuild, and don't let it scare you. I've serviced parts on many cars that the factory said were not servicable. They just want your money...
