    MBC + Performance Cal?

My '90 2.5L has a .42/.48 T3, 3bar map, and +40s and I am about to pick up a FWDP stage 5 cal so I can run more boost (I guess only 18psi with that cal?). I do intend to play w/ D-cal later this year but just want to run more boost and use the 3bar map in the meantime. I have only been able to run 11-12psi previously w/ my stock fuel system and cal.

My question is can I run more than 18psi using a MBC and the FWDP cal?

Yes. The FWDP cals are revised for higher spark/fuel curves to support the higher boost limits set by having a MBC, usually up to 29psi, but depending on the limits set by the cal.

I would keep the money for the cal in my pocket and d-cal it up now.

D-caling it would cost me a bit more, I'd rather have 18psi now for less. I want to buy a nice soldering station and OTC scanner once I go d-cal, but I need to put that money towards a new IC, alum radiator, and bigger trans cooler first.

I don't see why you would get the scanner when you are only running D-cal rather than with both. I won't knock anyones cal, but I think the publicly available cals out there right now are better than the stage 5 cal I am currently running in my car. They have more features, use the O2 sensor, don't have cold starting issues etc.

There has been a lot of headway made in the custom cal arena in the last year or so, and I don't think that there is anyone out there offering more versatility for the money.

Also, if you need a new IC, rad, and trans cooler you should probably hold off on more boost anyway. More boost when the computer is pulling timing will always be slower than less boost with full timing.

Everything I have now works fine, I just want to upgrade. I will have a new IC, rad, and trans cooler by the time a get a new cal anyway. I understand the FWDP cals are limited, but all I basically need right now is to run more boost. There are some local cars that I need to beat. When I decide to upgrade to d-cal, I'm going to buy a lot of stuff that's related but not necessarily required. That's just the way I want to do it. With everything I'm upgrading right now, I don't have the time to play with d-cal.

If someone else can get me a decent 3bar cal for my '90 2.5L soon, let me know.

There are guys on boostedmopar.com who will burn you a chip if you want to go that route. Last I checked any way. There are good publicly available cals for the 90 2.5.

My SBEC is not socketed though. I would need a whole new computer.

No, you need a $3 socket, and about 20 min...

Plus a good soldering iron. The one I want is about $50 - $100.

Wow, what does the 100 dollar one do that my $10 won't?

It's quality, the temp is adjustable, and it has interchangeable tips. I already have a solder sucker, solder, and flux, just need a good soldering iron.

Well, dammit, where can I purchase a socket? I'm done making excuses, time to play w/ d-cal.

Go to mouser. They have every thing you need for a good price. IIRC they upgraded my shipping for free for some reason, and I got it super fast.
