I posted a while back about having an overboost issue with my 86 Daytona T1. I'm thinking the computer is bad, but that's the least of my worries now. It was running fine one day, then it started giving me problems. it over boosted real bad, and i opened the hood right away with the car running and saw my dipstick ejected and puffing smoke everywhere. valve cover started leaking real bad after this too. new PCV valve chatters like crazy at an idle now.
I've heard that these motors are famous for blowing the rings on cylinder #4.I have not done a compression test yet, but i can hear when its cranking over that one cylinder has much lower compression than the rest.
so this leaves me with more questions:
Should i replace all the rings on all the pistons, even if there's only one cylinder with low compression?
Whats a reputable brand to buy pistons and rings from?
Replace all pistons while i have the engine apart? or just the one that's got issues?
other than a potentially messy engine bay, and less performance, whats the harm of driving the car with bad rings? can crankcase pressure eventually lead to something worse?
As for the boost problem, I've ordered a boost controller so i can just bypass the factory boost solenoid. i probably wont install it right away if I'm just going to be tearing the car apart in the near future..
any input/advice is greatly appreciated!
