    3.5" minivan exhaust

I built a new exhaust to replace the 3" one I had. I went with 3.5" because the down pipe I made for the AGP turbo is 3.5". I also made a screamer pipe. It's not that bad unless I'm next to a car and the noise can ricochet back at me. I may put a muffler on it. We'll see. I tried to run the exhaust without a muffler but it was unbearable. It has some drone to it but nothing I can't get use to.

Please please post a video this weekend. I'm gathering parts for a 2.4 build/swap, and was debating 3 or 3.5" exhaust, open wastegate, and a magnaflow or two. This may help the decision along.

Right now I'm running E85. I want to take it through emissions (my registration isn't up until Nov 2015) to see what the reading will be. If I pass then I will slide an empty cat around my exhaust pipe, tack-weld it to the pipe so it doesn't move or rattle, and call it a day.

    Re: 3.5" minivan exhaust

So after driving it a couple of days I've decided to put a muffler on to muffle the screamer pipe. It was cool the first couple of times but now it's just obnoxious. The muffler is 12" long and should fit where I want it above the k-member.

And I won't be going racing today/Friday. I have a lack of fuel at 20 psi of boost I haven't figured out yet.

instead of adding another muffler why not just flow it into the main pipe just before your main muffler??

Performance and diagnosis. It's better for performance to not route it back into your exhaust. I had it routed in before I redid it in 3.5". If it wasn't for the fact that it was vented to atmosphere, I wouldn't have known my external wastegate wasn't closing. My AGP 46mm wastegate is serviceable so I was able to fix that leak.

If my van didn't look like crap I'd leave it as is. I don't want it to sound the way it looks. I have a friend with a turbo Volvo with a screamer pipe and his sounds absolutely horrible. Mine doesn't sound that bad. I think it's just because of the configuration of the two different vehicles. The other day a friend left my shop the same time I did. I wanted his opinion of what it sounds like being the car next to me. I did a pull passing him and it sounded okay until I got next to him and the noise could ricochet back at me off his car making it much louder. I have other issues to address before I put the muffler on the wastegate. I'll try to post an audio file of what it sounds like.

Here is some audio of my screamer pipe in action. This is driving with the drivers side window down and my iPhone resting on the steering wheel.

Yeah, I could see how that would be super annoying, especially on a daily!

My turbo Volvo friend has one on his daily and likes it. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

    Re: 3.5" minivan exhaust

I put on a muffler and built an exhaust for my external wastegate. It sounds much better inside the van. I can't say the same for any car to my left.

You can't see the wastegate exhaust unless you get down on the ground.

I know, I was thinking the same thing. If I'd stop bolting crap to it I wouldn't have to work so hard to make it fast.

Hadn't planned on it but I can.

All day, every day. I find the sound helps me make better choices about hitting the gas pedal. Its okay to get into boost a little on each daily drive but if you are constantly opening your wastegate you are probably the type who gets themself in trouble. The faster the van gets the more trouble it is. Also, being incredibly loud but not being happy enough with how fast you accelerate is not very satisfying.

With a 3.5" exhaust and less then half the power a 3.5" system can handle, the weight hurts more then open dump helps. That is coming from some one who is very anti reentry.

I agree. The wastgate doesn't open often. My van pulls hard between 5-10 lbs of boost so going to 15 or whatever the EBC is set for isn't usually necessary. My van is getting scary to drive on the street. On E85, 20 lbs of boost and the high center of gravity makes for a nervous ride when flooring it.

I agree again. I didn't like the way the 3" exhaust fit and had to redo it anyway so since the down pipe was 3.5" I figured I'd just finish it in 3.5" I think the exhaust for the external wastegate is unnecessary but like the 3.5" exhaust, I did it because I can and for shock value when I tell or show people.
