Does it have to be this loud?

Got the fuel lines replaced today and got to drive it for the first time without breaking anything. Still have some odds and ends to finish, but the open swingvalve was first on the list. I had this stuff laying around, so this is what I installed:

2.5" non-mandrel bent exhaust piping from swingvalve past rear axle.
Dynomax Ultra Flow 3" in/3" out muffler

I'd like to quiet it down some, it's just an obnoxious noise to me. But, I don't want to kill any performance I may have from this half-assed exhaust. Is there a muffler I could use that doesn't restrict too much, does reduce noise somewhat, and doesn't cost a lot?

I've got a 3 in/3 out turbo style muffler kicking around the shed somewhere.

They are all bad. The best in term sof noise is a mangaflow oval muffler. They are still straight thru, but the stainless steel packing, the oval package, make for good sound.

get a cutout and dump it out of the DP and heavily muffle your normal exit...

I think there is a spiral resonator that works well also

DynoMax makes a 6" round SS muffler that is pretty quite. Don't have the P/N OTOH but they'll probably set you back a $100 .. maybe a bit less. For me, that one took the edge right off. Mine was a side exit too.

Since gone with a dump before the tank. Same muffler and then a 3" PE cast aluminum resonator.

RUn this or another 3" straight through muffler in series. I dont know where you would put it unless you use some adapters for your 2.5" exhaust. That or try and add a 2.5" ultraflow in the middle of your exhaust system that wont hurt flow ( I'm assuming you wont do this cause you are trying to save $$). That would give you 2 ultraflows in series. Basically you want to get the 2 mufflers/resonators in series, but still keep good flow.

hard to be quiet with no cat and just 1 good flowing muffler.

I use a 3" Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler and love it! It's quiet, cheap, and flows well. Read the reviews here:http://www.carreview.com/cat/parts/e...x.aspx#reviews.

    +1

I've got a 3" electric cutout with a 2.25" exhaust system. No cat, super turbo muffler. It purrs just like stock. Open up the cutout and you have (8" of open pipe) max flow and pure obnoxiousness. Though from outside an open cutout is actually quieter than a 3" exhaust. Not as refined sounding, but quieter.

My wife and neighbors complained about my 3" Hooker Maxflow, so I changed it for a Carsound 3" cat. It's LOUDER now! I'm looking at the 30" body Magnaflow. Will it fit on a Shadow?

Re: Does it have to be this loud?

I've been driving mine for a month like this now - 2.5" non-mandrel out the back through a 3 in, 3 out dynomax bullet, no cat. At first it was a little annoying, thus this post. Now, a month later, I love it. Not loud at all actually.

As a matter of fact, when coasting I occasionally have to glance at the tach to see if it's still running!!
