    Grand Cherokee No Start

Okay, I'm just hoping to get a quick response here. I have a 2002 grand cherokee limited with the 4.7 v8. I'm driving home from work and stop to get gas and then hop back in to head home and it won't start. The battery is less than 1 year old. When I got back in and tried to start it up, it didn't even try to turn over. All the electrical stuff works fine still, and the alt gauge showed that it was still charging earlier today. I've never had a starter crap out on me without giving at least a little bit of warning. Any ideas?

Moved the shifter through the gears a few times and it started right up. But only once, it's dead again. Must be some sort of neutral safety switch problem.

verify the battery is dead with a voltmeter during cranking..that will tell you alot

if the voltage doesnt change much during cranking, and stays around 11V, then you have something preventing power from even getting to the starter

if the voltage drops like a rock to 9V (or lower) but the starter doesnt turn, then your battery is dead and thats a whole different troubleshooting tree

This was a common problem with earlier 4.0L jeeps, neutral safety switch failures.

So apparently these dont have a NSS like the older jeeps. Its now working intermittently regardless of whether I move the shifter around. I'm thinking maybe the solenoid needs to checked.

    Re: Grand Cherokee No Start

Yeah, I checked the terminals, they were fine. I pulled the starter out and had it tested. Sure enough, it tested bad. Ill be happy if it was that simple.

Now you have seen a starter crap out without a warning. Never rule anything out.
