Re: Help me pick some wheels!

OK, I was getting the CSX ready to come out of the garage for the first time this year and I noticed some severe cracking on the sidewall of the L/R. Time for some new tires, so it's probably time for some new wheels too. The ones on the car have the chronic chrome flaking going on and I'm not going to put up with that.

It's been a while since this thread was started and I know there have been some pretty big movements in tire sizes. What size do you guys recommend these days? How about some nice light wheels to go with them? Right now I'm leaning toward some 225/45r16s. There are some R1Rs that have my name all over them in that size.

ETA: I looked it up and apparently the Willwood big brake kit for the SRT4s will work with the 16" BBS wheels so I think anything I would consider would clear too.

Are 16" tires going to go the way of the Dodo soon enough that skipping that wheel size would be a good idea? Just like avoiding buying a helmet right before it expires?

I've thought about that too. It's a tough choice to say the least.

The price of tires in the larger wheel categories makes it hard for me to want to upgrade.

16's might start to have a decline, but I have a feeling that enough performance cars came with 16" wheels that those will stay around for a while. Especially because there are still a lot of people that run classes of racing that require the stock wheel diameter.

Re: Help me pick some wheels!

Sure, but look at the huge number of old tiny sports cars that came with 13" and 14" tires, and those went extinct anyway in all BUT race compounds which are useless for street cars.

16 is already dying. There are still a lot of options, but the slide has already begun.

Having said that, i would still run 16s for the time being as long as you accept that the next time you buy tires you may be buying wheels again, just like you have accepted it for this go'round.

Dont push the red button. You hear me?

16's are here for along time, many new cars still come with 16's.

Personally, I like the VW BBS spoke wheels, trying to find another set for the van. I had some for it but put those on my Jetta, lol.

Re: Help me pick some wheels!

Yeah I agree.. go for 16's and you get more sidewall for potholes. They will be around. Maybe only 20 sizes rather than 40.. and that isn't really a deal breaker. Even the 15's will be around a while, just have to compromise on either size or compound now to do 15's.

I like those vw bbs wheels. They never seem to go cheap when I see them for sale near me.

Re: Help me pick some wheels!

I got mine for free, badly corroded but 30 mins with a wire wheel, some acid solved that,

Just need to find another set for my van, I prefer those over the GTC wheels.

If you like the VW BBS wheels, why not try to find a set of 2nd gen Neon R/T wheels? They're known as "Silverstones" and they're 16". As far as OEM wheels on the later-model cars, I think they are far and away the nicest looking.

Re: Help me pick some wheels!

I am going through the same dilemma right now with Mini. I have some options with spare wheels i already have, but they require new tires. I always look to keep the lightest tires i can find. Due to cost, i didn't get the 19#/tire LRR Bridgestones, but opted for some 20#/tire General Altimax R43 or something like that in size 215/60R15 for the American Racing star wheels. (18# wheel)
Other options were some SRT4 wheels but they weigh 22#. Or the PT GT wheels which are probably about the same.
I have the original PT GT tires, with some treadlife left, so i might still mount them on the SRT4 wheels to see what they look like.
All the 17" tire options were fat (and $$), like 22-23# was the lightest ones i could find.

If you can drop it a bit I really like 17s on the P-bodies.

It's already sitting pretty low with the eibach springs that are on there. Do you think this is enough?

Re: Help me pick some wheels!

Would I be disappointed going with a 7" wheel? I'm thinking I would be. Can I get a 5x114 hub into SRT4 knuckles? I really would like to use SRT knuckles but it looks like I may need to go with a 5x114 bolt pattern like Jon Trotter did so that I can get some proper fitting wheels.

Before and after coilovers. The first is on Eibachs definitely and has too much tractor. In fact I really don't like how the car looks in the first one to a point of embarrassment and the only change is ride height. That being said it is a bit harder to drop the CSX while trying to keep the GFX in tact.
