" It is a relatively high compression engine (9.25:1) utilizing specialty head porting, chamber reshaping, as well as custom milled pistons. The crank is forged, the rods are actually early 2.2 carb versions that have been cryo treated. The pistons started life as early 80's TRW flat-top forgings. Clearances were all blue printed, and the entire assembly has been balanced (including the flywheel). It was designed for rallye racing, where it would have out-of-boost torque coming out of the corners, and live comfortably at 14 psi boost.

AFR at cruise to about 17:1 Timing requirements are going to be quite conservative, as the system is designed for a very fast burn." Words from Mike Holler

Sounds like a lot of thought went into it, it'll be interesting to see how it works.

No pics of the pistons or chambers? Can't wait to see someone on here run an MPGMike setup, been a lot of talk about his methods. And since his own Daytona project with all his little tricks has never made it to road-worthy status, this will be the first run of an engine with his mods on it. I know a few others have heads down by him, but I don't think anyone has run them yet.

Glad you posted the invoice, saves us from asking how-much-he-charged-for whatnot I think you got a great value there considereing he did the R&R of the motor It looks like he did brakes, motor mounts and lots of extra fab work too. Nice looking engine bay now

Re: MPG Mike long block engine 1989 Daytona Shelby engine rebuild complete!

Thanks gents, I just did my first MPG check. The conditions were speed between 55-60mph light on the throttle. The road surface was flat on I-81 near Fort Indiantown Gap Army training base, PA. The results were 29.4MPG. I took the Daytona back to Graham's and I'm having him send out the +40 injectors to witchhunters.com. Also, I'm having him install the top of the line NGK plugs and adjustable fuel pressure regulator. A six pound spring will be used, as I'm not going to boost the heck out of it. An external waste gate will be installed also. I want to see this car get to at least 35 MPG. I believe Graham did take some pictures, and I will hassle him until he emails or burns them to disc.

Did Mike do the mods for power or mileage?

That mileage figure should be no problem. I've achieved 32-33mpgs consistently in my Daytona with stock everything minus cat and an MP computer. That's all freeway 65-70mph.

Sorry guys didn't receive a email notification about your comments. Cordes thanks for the input. Assuming In tune Autoworks can work a little more magic, then yeah its a highly probable goal. Mike Holler did the intern engine mods, pretty much his head porting will be the biggest factor. I should have road results in about two weeks. Awaiting the injectors back from witchhunter.com and possible a wiring harness to get the AEM tru-boost controller functioning, as more than just a boost gauge.

Hopefully this works finally!! Gutting the old 1989 wiring, computer etc. What will be installed Entirely AEM components, including the EMS-4 system and air intake. It's coming along well.

If you can get a Daytona to get 30 mpg around 70mph, that's pretty good. I know my car will easily get over 30 around 65, but 70 or more and I'm going to get 29 almost every time.

Yeah first round with the MPG Mike engine, I was only getting 21 MPG at 65mph on flat ground. I think with AEM efficiency/technology I can come up with some impressive results.

I got 37 mpg on the interstate in my Shelby Z, stock 2.2 T2 w/ a fmic, 3" exhaust and a +40/3-bar tune. My Lebaron gets 26-28 driving around town and 32-35 interstate, 2.5 w/ an awic, 3" exhaust and +40/3-bar tune. According to mpgMike, his intake and head mods should allow you to blow those figures away...

Yeah I'm hoping so, I will for sure be recording and posting results at different speeds, flat ground of course.

Sequential Fuel Injection(SFI) will be running the Daytona, cool upgrades.
