Cool! I remember the air dams well. I always thought it made it look like a hovercraft.

My goal is to pick up a Red/Silver Z and Silver/Black Turbo, but no luck on either! Timing is everything.

We had a 84 Red/Silver Z. I believe 86 we had a Gunmetal/Silver Z. I cannot remember what we had in 85. These were yearly dealer demo cars. I know we later had a Dark Cherry Pacifica.

I'm assuming they weren't installed until the cars reached the dealerships, because they sat low enough that I could see a lot of issues with loading/unloading on the transport trucks. Mine would often scrape on even minor speed bumps.

The third part of the package was a very low front airdam which mounted under the radiator support. Very few of these survived due to the ridiculously low ground clearance.

Here's a pic I found on Google that shows them well:

Man, this thread is making me want to track down another '86 Z.

That's it! Being that I am an L body guy I sort of lose track of the other models and the options that they have...pizza, swiss cheese wheels, and now air fences.

Is it common to find the fences on cars now a days or have they gotten ruined over the years and few make it?

No, the fences are not common anymore. If they have not been broken or just removed long ago they are wavy like the bacon in your avatar.

Also it has been dicussed that they were probably phased out early in 86. But not confirmed.

Re: 86 Daytonas had Swiss Cheese option?

Both of my '86s had them, but my CS was an early production car built in November of '85. It still had the '85 style hood latch. As for the other one, I could check with the current owner to see what the build date was.

I do have a couple pair of the side fences stashed away, but they are far from perfect. I've never been able to find an original, intact front piece.

I always liked the fences, thought that was one of the best features of the Turbo Z. From my experience, most plain '86 Turbo Z had them, and most (but not all) '86 Turbo Z C/S's I've seen did not have them. I think I've seen pictures of one C/S that had the fences.

Sorry - you are right, I confused it with another listing that was a CS. I think the CS listing was deleted, so ignore my post.

Re: 86 Daytonas had Swiss Cheese option?

I love the look of those air fences. I've hunted forever to fine one for mine. I heard from somewhere that the lower air damn from the mid 80's S-10's are a perfect fit for the front. But I've never been able to find one. Here was my fix I came up with for mine. It's the lower front plastic piece that comes on 90% of 2000-2006's GM K bodies (Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe) I just cut it and modified it to fit. The pic looks a little off. But it looks pretty sweet in person.

85 GLHT after driving home on the freeway. Reeves has one on his GLHT too.

    Voyager LX

Pretty confident I was the 1st to install one unless someone put one on before 1999, and have been spreading the word ever since.

    Looking at 84 Parts Catalog
    4284 111 WHEEL, 15x6.0 (WJC)(w/Turbo "Z")(Substitution) - Picture shown as 4-lug Pizza
    4284 005 WHEEL, 15x6.0 (WJC) - 4-lug Swiss Cheese

    85 Parts Catalog
    4284 427 WHEEL, 15X6.0 (WJA) - 5-lug Pizza
    4284 401 WHEEL, 15X6.0 (WJC) - 5-Lug Swiss Cheese - Laser XE

    86 Parts Catalog
    4284 427 WHEEL, 15X6.0 (WJA) - 5-lug Pizza
    4284 401 WHEEL, 15X6.0 (WJP) - 5-lug Swiss Cheese -Daytona

Very confusing... I guess you just need to see it in person. But it does seem like an optional part WJP in 1986 for Daytona, but optional part WJC for Laser in 85.

Re: 86 Daytonas had Swiss Cheese option?

I remember buying a set of air fences when they were still available. I must have had them in my rafters still in their original packages for like 15 years. I liked the look of them too and wanted to put them on my 87 Shelby Z. Not even close to fitting. I think I finally sold these things for about half what I bought them for. Another great investment (lol). Probably sold them like 5 years or so ago.
