86 Daytonas had Swiss Cheese option?

After all these years, I just noticed in the 86 Daytona catalog says that 'vented' rims were a No Cost option on Zs. Vented rims are the 5-lug swiss cheese wheels (they are pictured). I've only known those to exist on 85 Lasers.

Anyone ever seen an actual documented 86 Daytona with Swiss Cheese wheels? NOT available on 85s by the way.

I thought I was going to see pictures of a daytona that you can see daylight through the body.

I have a set of the 5-lug swiss cheese wheels but im not sure what all they were available on. I believe 86 was the first year for 5-lug so an 85 Daytona would not have had the 'same' swiss cheese wheels even if they were available.

I have seen them on non-Turbo Z Daytonas but never checked the spoiler for the third brake light to determine if it was an '85 or '86.

All Daytonas and Lasers were 5 lug in 85.

Ahh, ok. I've had some 85s that were 4-lug so i guess the Daytonas were 'early adopters'.

So what all DID the 5-lug swiss cheese wheels come from?

As far as I knew, they were only on 85 Lasers. Never seen them in any other brochure/catalog until last night in my 86 Daytona catalog. I've had that catalog since 1986 and just noticed.

I thought the swiss cheese rims were made for the daytona. The laser got the wagon wheels, exclusive to the laser only.

Swiss was for early Shelby Chargers, Omni GLH, some 84 Daytonas, 84-85 Lasers, and apparently 86 Daytonas. Maybe others?

The wagon wheels were for the XT package, much like the Crabs only came on Daytonas with the CS package. My '85 Laser XE had the swiss cheese.

Technically, there was no Lancer GTS; it was a Lancer ES. GTS was LeBaron. But I recall Pizza rims, but never swiss cheese. But with the factory, anything is possible.

My bad. I always get those mixed up. But I recall seeing swissers on gts's though unless they were swapped.

My 86 brochure shows the swiss cheese wheels as a no cost option on the TurboZ. I don't recall seeing any.

Right, I think maybe they thought they might have some leftover 5-lug swiss cheese rims, but then they didn't...

    A bit of a hijack..

I remember seeing back in the day Daytona's with a side skirt that closed the air gap along the length of the car between the front and rear wheels

Anyone have any info on that ???

Re: 86 Daytonas had Swiss Cheese option?

Do you mean the black plastic air fences? They were a standard part of the Turbo Z body package, although it seems a lot of customers didn't like them and had their dealerships leave them off. I'm assuming they weren't installed until the cars reached the dealerships, because they sat low enough that I could see a lot of issues with loading/unloading on the transport trucks. Mine would often scrape on even minor speed bumps.

The third part of the package was a very low front airdam which mounted under the radiator support. Very few of these survived due to the ridiculously low ground clearance.

Here's a pic I found on Google that shows them well:

Man, this thread is making me want to track down another '86 Z.

Yes, the black air fences and lower half of the front bumper (airdam) were installed at the dealer as part of the new car prep. They were shipped inside the car in clear plastic bags with the mounting hardware and installation instructions. I did a few!
