1988 CSX-T 2.2 Turbo QUESTION, While shifting from 2nd to 3rd accelerating onto the highway, BANG noise from under hood, Now engine runs fine but no go. Did my clutch finally go? My drive axles seem to be fine and engine runs fine, but I try putting it into gear and it does not go. I still have to push down on the clutch which feels like it's there, but nothing. Any help appreciated.
Sounds like to me that the transaxle broke. Got a spare trans?
I've had the marcel(metal wave springy thing that is connected by rivets to the two clutch friction halves) let go and no forward motion after that. Didn't go bang tho. Will the trans shift through the gears with the motor OFF?

The diff pins can be an issue on these transmissions. If the clutch was failing, other than the failure Alan described, I would think you would have had noticed some slipping prior to it being unable to move the car. I had a throw out bearing fail once, but the vehicle still moved, it just made a horrible racket.

blew the carbon clean off the disc is my guess.
Put it in gear with the car running. If it won't move at all look underneath to see if the axle is spinning. Is so, you broke one for sure. If not, it could have broken off in the diff. All other suggestions are good ones too. I like the carbon off the disk guess particularly.
I have that happen to my car also, It was the clutch disk in pieces hitting the inside of the bell housing. You could jack the front end up so both tires are off the ground, Spin one tire back and forth about 3-4" and see if the other tire is moving at all. Sometimes when doing that the spiders gears can lock up and you can spin both tires at the same time, This will tell ya if there is a broken axle or not.

I'm the OP's son and I can tell you it was not the drive axles, both are out and in good shape. Work on the vehicle has been limited due to the shitty weather and our lack of a garage.
Bummer. Time for a rebuild then I guess.
Yeah we're already rebuilding a 2.5 TII to put in it anyway. Guess we'll just do both tranny and engine at once.
