    Naturally Aspriated Tall Deck TIII

Since I already have a thread for my car, I thought I'd start a new one for the Super Stock engine I'm going to build for it. This will be a long process, if for no other reason than I decided on a TIII head, and I don't yet even have one.

Anyway, the plan is to use a Tall-Deck block, long rods, forged pistons, and a TIII head. Raise the compression to naturally aspirated levels, and see what it can do. I'm hoping for 250hp to start with more to come later.

Here's the thread that got me started - http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/sh...led&highlight=

This will be for NHRA Super Stock, GS. SS/GS is a FWD 'corporate engine' class. Basically, engine swaps are legal, max displacement is 165cuin, and the total weight of the car+driver must be greater than 16lbs/cu-in of engine displacement. The only engine tech is to pump it for displacement. So, this should be fun.

There are 2 other cars In the country that regularly run SS/GS - both are Neons.

From what i read, the tall block uses the same height pistons as the 2.2, so whats up with the 2.5 on the sticker on the je box?

(From what i read, the tall block uses the same height pistons as the 2.2, so whats up with the 2.5 on the sticker on the je box? )

    (Longer rods!!!

    Thanks
    Randy)

I'm editing my previous post as I seem to have lost most of it making me look like more of a dumb*** than I really am.

Rob bought a set of custom ordered pistons that were speced. for a 2.5 tall deck with a T-III head.
That's why the compression height is 2.2 rather than a 2.5 common block. As they use 1.5-1.5- 4.0 mm rings this makes them different from 2.2 T-III pistons. Also the bore is 3.5" which only a tall deck is considered thick enough to accept.

As tall deck rods are longer and light weight this left Rob needing a set of custom rods. Recently he lucked into a set of these !!!

Rob feel free to correct me on any of this, and best of luck on this project!!

    Thanks
    Randy

There is no logical reason to call an Engine a motor.

Not sure; as far as I can tell, these are the same compression height as 2.2 TIII pistons - 1.605". I got the pistons and rods 2nd hand. They just coincidentally work together.

Cams will need to be custom, of course.

I plan to use the trans I already have for my stocker. It's a built A413. Though, I also have a completely dismantled spare that's just waiting for me to build it.

sounds like a cool project and with the t3 head, I would think 250 hp would be no problem. Hurry up and get it running, I can't wait to see the results!

Are you the one that made the TIII stubby intake manifolds? I may be contacting you about getting one

Yes. Take a look through this thread. I still have a few head and plenum flanges left.

The ones I have for sale now dont have the bungs machined into the flange. I only ever made 4 of the style in the picture and they are all welded into intakes now so you wont find any like that.

I don't care which ones I have, they are a work of art. I hope to use mine this winter on a "special" project. Rob, if you need one and Adam has them, get it quick, Adam's stuff sells fast!!

I wondered if you still had those pistons. Too bad they are too big for a standard 2.2 block or I would have snatched them up. Hell of a steal though and weird that the guy had no idea about what they were ordered for.

They're definitely an odd-ball piston. Luckily, perfect for what I want to do. Hopefully, the TD is actually thick enough to take a 3.5" bore. I think I can check out a sonic thickness gauge from work. I'll have to check. I know we have one, not sure if they'll let me bring it home...

Any idea who had them made? I get the impression they've bounced around the forums for a while.

I had just found them on a random craigslist ad from columbus and the guy had no idea what they were for. I emailed him a couple times asking questions and after that I forwarded his email to you and you had him ship them.

Re: Naturally Aspriated Tall Deck TIII

I would say as long as your wall thickness is at least .230 on the thrust side before boring you would be good. The only part to worry about is the casting line midway up the cylinder, I have seen them .080ish deep or more, my last engine cracked there. If you are planning on really getting crazy you could always blockfill 2/3ds the way up.

I will have a chance to get by my shop this week and dig out those cams, I've wondered over the years just how much lift they will be good for, .600A? .700? Time will tell I suppose. They are undrilled, and unmachined so they will take some work but the sky's the limit
