Heck, I even remember reading someplace that it was believed the engine couldn't handle boost....yeah...ok...
Our 4.0L had 240k+ miles BEFORE we turboed it. It ran 12.9 in the 1/4 at last year's Challenge on around 11psi. We ran out of fuel with the stock fuel pump and the upsized injectors otherwise we were going to crank it to the moon until things came out for air. We made one 13psi pass, but it kept reaching fuel cut. With a new higher flowing fuel pump, the thing will make more power. The only thing we have ever done to the engine internally was replace the head gasket, and that was a while back. The rest of it is bone stock!

We were really in unknown territory with the build. All the Internet forums gave conflicting info and urban legends, so we kinda had to piece together what sounded good and use our own knowledge to make it work.

I had a hard time believing that the 4.0 couldn't handle boost. I thought I'd seen a supercharger kit for them a long time ago in a 4x4 magazine. Besides, it's known a a very stout and robust engine. I figured that with good tuning and keeping the revs in check ti wouldn't be an issue.

I'm REALLY glad you guys had success with it!

I guess the 4.2L's have a stronger rotating assembly, so I'm really eager to see how much boost we can toss at this Spirit.

There was an old article I remember from the 90's that was "Turbocharging the AMC Eagle"
A guy with an Eagle wagon put a turbo on the 4.2. I can't remember which magazine though.

That would be a fun project now with all the turbo and EFI advances of the last 20 years.

    FYI:
'82-'83 came w/ B/W T-5, first vehicle to get T-5 (ahead of Mustangs).
THere was also magazine story of Jeep Cherokee w/ Turbo 5.0 Jeep L-6 by Hurley Engines (HESCO) in Alabama.

I've seen a lot of people talk about a supercharger kit for the 4.0 on jeepsunlimited. They no longer make them.and are apparently impossible to find. I think.I saw Jackson racing as the manufacturer?
A turbo would be great on one. I love my WJ but with the weight of the vehicle would love some extra power.

    Re: $2013 GRM Shadow

Thought it would be about time to catch this build thread back up a bit. I've done a lot with this car since the $2013 Challenge. Took it to SDAC in PA and as usual, had a blast. The Shadow was pounded on hard in the autox and drag race portions of the event, and did very well in both. What I was most proud of was that the car won Spirit of SDAC, which was very cool.

Moving into 2015, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the car next until I heard that GRM was doing an "anniversary" event was inviting all past GRM cars to come back for $2015. I decided I"d bring the Shadow back one more time, but wanted to bring it back different. The car was torn apart again and rebuilt as a $1000 car for the $2015 GRM Challenge. This meant putting a stock drivetrain in it, removing some suspension goodies, gauges, light weight wheels, etc...all to get it down to a sub $1000 budget class. That event was a blast. I took my son Sean with me decided that I wasn't going to register the car under my name...I was just a team member. Sean Culkin was the owner, builder, etc. Every time I rolled up to run, whether it was the drags or the autox, Sean heard his name over the PA system. We also had a little fun with the registration forms as we detailed the build (see pics) that got some laughs. We both got to meet Al Unser, Jr., which was pretty cool We ended up coming in 4th overall, 1st in the $1000 class and 3rd in the drags with a 12.16. Best car/kid trip ever.

    Pics coming shortly

Two videos...one drag pass and one fairly lousy autox pass.

Great stuff Pat, especially your son's obvious pride in his dad.
    John Laing

"The sole condition which is required in order to succeed in centralizing the supreme power in a democratic community, is to love equality, or to get men to believe you love it. Thus the science of despotism, which was once so complex is simplified, and reduced . . . . to a single principle."
    -- Alexis de Tocqueville

"One of the methods used by statists to destroy capitalism consists in establishing controls that tie a given industry hand and foot, making it unable to solve its problems, then declaring that freedom has failed and stronger controls are necessary."
    --Ayn Rand

"To evolve, you don't need a Constitution. All you need is a legislature and a ballot box . . . . things will evolve as much as you want. All of these changes can come about democratically; you don't need a Constitution to do that and it's not the function of a Constitution to do that."
    -- Justice Antonin Scalia

That is just way too cool Pat. Reminds me of how much fun my son & I had at SDAC-26 this year. Gotta love that father son time. That is the best reward ever, regardless of if you win the event or not.

He'll remember that forever, as will you.

Bone stock 2.2, stock unported swirl top end, .48 Garrett with unknown compressor wheel (assume ford 60 trim) with the divorced downpipe I made a few years ago. 3 bar cal, 40's, 23-24 psi. Dual stock intercooler in the nose. Race weight of 2490 with me in it, 24.5" m&h's, stock open diff 568. Went 12.16 in Gainesville.

With a bit more timing and better air, went 11.75 @ 116 at Cecil with same set up. The videos Carroll posted above are from that day at Cecil.

It honestly was faster than I had thought it would be.
