    $2013 GRM Shadow

After finishing Drag Week, I dug out and dusted off my '88 Shadow. Me and this car go way back...I bought it for $300 way back when with a knocking/leaking stock 2.2 T1/520. I converted it to T3/568, ran it as a street car, then as a street/racer, then in '08 converted it to run on the cheap and ran it in the $2008 GRM Challenge, where it placed 5th overall. I learned a ton in that event and decided to take it back in '09, where it placed 2nd overall after not running right in the drags. In April, 2010, the bone stock used motor finally let go after a drag strip mishap, blowing a head gasket and bending a rod. Since then, most of it's parts were used in the ScAries as that was built into the GRM project for '10, '11 and '12.

With some rule changes over the years, some budget money had been freed up since I ran the Shadow in '09. The roll bar no longer counted towards budget, nor did Kuhmo tires. Luckily, winning in '12 won me a set of Kuhmo V710 autox tires, which freed up even more budget. That being the case, my plan originally was to throw a stock 8v into the car and focus on the suspension and see what it would do in the $1k class, however, when I finally opened up the rules for '13, I realized that they dropped the $1k class. Without that budget limitation, I decided going fast was the only other option. :-)

The stock SMEC harness was thrown back in, as was all the stuff I stole from the car for the Aries....shifter, cables, control arms/bushings, etc. I then "borrowed" the drivetrain out of the ScAries. The reason I used that motor is that it was built as a GRM motor, meaning that it was done on the super cheap. It's a non common block, cast crank, T2 rods with stock cast T2 pistons. The top end is a cylinder head that I ported, a ported exhaust manifold, an intake plenum I built out of a GM truck driveshaft and a Thunderbird T3 60trim/.63 turbo and a used nitrous system. The Aries will get something else at some point. For an intercooler, I am running 2 stock cores, y piped in. To save budget money, I didn't buy any bends....all of the bends you see for the piping is pie cut and welded, including the Y's.

For the suspension, I used the double spring set up I came up with for the ScAries a couple years ago. I also fabricated both upper and lower mounts out of scrap metal and sections of pipe to run 2.5" coilover springs in the rear. This will give me a much more balanced suspension set up then I ever ran in the ScAries, which was very stiff up front and fairly soft in the rear. With the budget allowances given and where some of the parts were sourced (the ScAries is technically one of my parts cars on the budget...which I bought with a ton of parts), I have budget room to run a set of older, used Koni's I already owned.

It runs and drives (as of yesterday!) but has zero testing done on it. I have less than 2 weeks before I leave for Florida and have a ton of work to do still. I'll post updates as time permits but attached are some pics of the progress so far.

Once you win are you not allowed to run that car again or is that just the spirit of the event?

I could have but didn't really want to. Did what I wanted to there with that car.

    Re: $2013 GRM Shadow

Very cool. You may have noticed from GRM forums but i am going this year too with a last-minute build on my 88 Lancer Shelby which has no past history of success and is not sorted and never has been.

I'm very interested in your rear spring setup since i still need stiff rear springs and have a couple of coilover setups. I can't really tell what is going on under your lower spring perch on the axle. Do you have any pics of that without the sleeve over it?

Also, im curious of your opinion on your tiny turbo vs my tiny turbo. I'm running a stock garrett with a 60 trim compressor in machined stock housing, stock turbine and .48 housing and 2.25sv. I can't remember off-hand what the best you did in the aries without spray was but im figuring it was over 300whp. Does your turbo have that divorced wastegate thing you built on it? The best thing i can say about my nasty nasty discharge setup is Aaron M. once trapped 108 through a 2.25 but i doubt i will even get that far.

I guess i should quit dragging --- and post up my own build thread here! Your work is looking great as usual, can't wait to check it out in person!

Dont push the red button. You hear me?

    Re: $2013 GRM Shadow

I just looked and I don't have any pics of the lower perches before I slid the sleeve on. What I did was cut the stock perch out completely and welded in a plate. I then made an angled perch set up to align with the angle of the spring, which was slightly modified from the original angle (upper perch moved towards the front of the car about an inch), and welded the lower perch to the lower plate. I then took a section of 2.25" exhaust pipe and sectioned it to reduce the diameter, seam welded it on the inside, then welded it to the perch. The adjuster sleeve slides over the locator pipe and sits on the angled perch. The upper perch is a piece of plate built into a U channel to fit over the frame rail, then welded to the frame rail. The locator pipe is a piece of 2.5" pipe sectioned smaller to fit inside a 2.5" spring, seam welded on the inside, then welded to the perch plate. It was a lot of work but other than the sleeves, all pieces were leftovers, scrap pieces and other junk that I just don't throw away. I'm very happy with how it worked out.

On the turbo, I am running the divorced downpipe/wastegate set up that I built for the ScAries. That makes a huge difference in how the car performed. On the ScAries, it went 11.01 with the divorced set up on it, I then put a TU3" swing valve on it with a 3" downpipe and it went 11.3's. Went back to the divorced set up and went 10.96. MPH went from 124.5 to 120 to 125. Different tracks, different days, but still a big enough difference to tell me that my cobbled set up works. With my car, I'm ballparking that it made over 300 without spray, but I never really ran the turbo on all of it. I'm betting that the .48 with a stock wheel will be a cork for you, especially with a 2.5.

Time to get back to work! See you in Gainesville!

It runs from the valve cover to a barb I welded to the fuel pump block off plate. Helps get crank case blow by pressure up to the two valve cover vents without all of it running up the oil returns. I was worried about making sure oil back to the pan was as clear as possible with all the time this motor sees the rev limiter while autocrossing.

Thought so. R/Ts done that before. I agree the oil returns are not always effective on sustained high RPM runs.

    Dooood. Good idea!!

Would you say the stock turbo valve cover's one outlet is a flow problem even with a 'good' motor?

Not to worry, Adam...it's not like I'm done with TIII's. This is just a temporary blip. :-)

I couldn't really say for certain but dedicated path(s) for crankcase pressure ventilation sure couldn't hurt.

Nice work Pat! I will again be taking notes for my CSX build. I wish I could have made it there this year with it so we could have had dueling "Under $1K" cars".

We will be there again with the Jeep XJ-R. This year, we installed a real FMIC and some other goodies.

    See you all there!
