"I'm thinking this is most likely a wiring problem, as the fuel pump will prime with no issues when it dies. Maybe it could be a bad SBEC, since this is the one which was in the fire. I guess I'll have to find out soon."

I would leave that parked with the battery disconnected for now if I were you...

I had a harness that had "ghosts" and one night I dropped the hood shut
a few seconds later smoke started roaring out the front opening to the power module..

it was a good thing I'd stayed in the garage and not turned to go in the house

I have been doing that just so the battery wouldn't die, but you make a great point. It wasn't that long ago that 5digits had an Omni burn and nearly take out his house due to an electrical problem. I need to do some work on my wife's Neon today, so I'll disconnect the battery while I'm out there.

In order to see if it's the SBEC doing bad things intermittently, I have removed the chip from another one tonight. I'll have a socket in it and be ready for testing tomorrow.

Well, the socketing of the boards was interesting. I had to use two SBECs in the process because one didn't prime the pump when I had installed it. The one in the car now has fired it up every time. I have also relayed the lights with Hella relays and blocks. That should really help, as there was a .1x volt drop between the battery and driver's side headlight. I don't want to know what it would be across the whole car to the pass side.

Are you still running a VNT or have you changed to a standard turbo?

It has been a standard turbo since shortly before the car caught fire. I am in the process of putting a VNT back onto #497 though.
