"I'm thinking this is most likely a wiring problem, as the fuel pump will prime with no issues when it dies. Maybe it could be a bad SBEC, since this is the one which was in the fire. I guess I'll have to find out soon."

I would leave that parked with the battery disconnected for now if I were you...

I had a harness that had "ghosts" and one night I dropped the hood shut
a few seconds later smoke started roaring out the front opening to the power module..

it was a good thing I'd stayed in the garage and not turned to go in the house

I have been doing that just so the battery wouldn't die, but you make a great point. It wasn't that long ago that 5digits had an Omni burn and nearly take out his house due to an electrical problem. I need to do some work on my wife's Neon today, so I'll disconnect the battery while I'm out there.

In order to see if it's the SBEC doing bad things intermittently, I have removed the chip from another one tonight. I'll have a socket in it and be ready for testing tomorrow.

Well, the socketing of the boards was interesting. I had to use two SBECs in the process because one didn't prime the pump when I had installed it. The one in the car now has fired it up every time. I have also relayed the lights with Hella relays and blocks. That should really help, as there was a .1x volt drop between the battery and driver's side headlight. I don't want to know what it would be across the whole car to the pass side.

Are you still running a VNT or have you changed to a standard turbo?

It has been a standard turbo since shortly before the car caught fire. I am in the process of putting a VNT back onto #497 though.

Well, nearly 5 years after I last posted to this thread, it's time for an update.

I pulled the panhard bar out of the rear today. I wanted to put on some new ends, and perhaps take some measurements to make some more of these. I desperately need one installed in my 89 Lancer.

I also took a lot of measurements up front. Since both front fenders are pretty well junk at this point, I might cut them up to fit some large wheels and tires. I'll start a thread about it, but I would really like to squeeze a 275 width tire on there. I think that will take some doing in order to make it something which would be allowed on a road course, or even autocross these days. I think it would be worth it in the end for the mechanical grip. From there, it might be time to look at larger (and potentially lighter) brakes on the front.

I pulled the top half of the two piece off last night to see what my Lengel plenum would look like on there. I was doing some thinking about how to get vacuum off of it and a provision for the CTS, etc. The main thing I want to get right is the vac for the brake booster.

From there, I pulled an axle for replacement. Thanks to Todd for getting me thinking about the viscous coupling LSD that's in the car. Per his research, it uses a modified passenger side, and stock driver's side axle. That's great, since my driver's side is the one which needs replaced.

I have a clip coming for a brake switch, and so that should be sorted out.

The big question is whether I pull the trigger on some 17x10 wheels and see how big of a tire I can fit without contacting the BC struts while still getting an alignment on the thing. I'm sure the scrub radius will be right out the window, but I can't seem to find anything on the internet which states how bad that actually is. If anyone has some feedback, I'm all ears.

I took some measurements last night. The rpf1s in a 17x9.5 with the 18mm offset in a 5x114.3 should fit. I think the widest tire I can get under there will be a 255, and that might take a spacer, but it will be close.

Today I'll probably throw the two piece lower I ported on the car with the Lengel plenum. It needs some injectors too. From there I'll need to get the interior back together and I should be able to do a test drive at that point. Since Joy will have to drive this to sdac, I'll want it to be fairly trouble free.

More progress this morning. I took the humps out of the two piece lower I welded up. I'll throw this on when I pull the head to inspect everything.

There was nothing wrong with the injector wiring harness but I wanted to do one that would last and have a high temp rating, so here we are.

Intercooler piping is in and I just need to inf a couple nuts to hook up the coil. Then I should be set to fire this thing up!

Aaaaaaand the fuel pump is dead...

Just ordered a 340lph Holly unit from Jegs, mainly because I think it will be here in time. I sure hope they work well...

ETA: Looks like that pump might end up being a spare. Apparently, the only connector not hooked up under the dash was the fuel pump wire. Thank goodness. It was bad enough pulling the connector to see if there was voltage and to test it with the Load Pro. All appears to be well now.

I warmed the car up, set the timing, and I'm letting it cool off to retorque the head studs. No fluids are leaking, and it only smells of the antiseize burning off. I put a decent effort into getting this thing together in a manner which will make it to SDAC and back with as few troubles as possible. I sure hope that happens after all this work.

I put the panhard bar back on. With the 42" length and the 3/4" rod ends, it's too long for my liking. With the bar collapsed all the way you can get it evened out, but it could use to be at least 2" shorter. I may attempt that when I return from SDAC.

Yes, I think most, if not all the cars pass the Z1 circuit through the bulkhead and to the driver's kick panel under the dash. From there it snakes along the door sill and then under the seat to where it goes out for the connection at the actual pump. It was the one little connector which I somehow missed.

Today I'm dealing with the stuck caliper from hades. The R/F either has a collapsed hose which is trapping the fluid, or when the caliper gets hot the piston is seizing up in the bore. I cleaned the caliper bore once and it looked fine. The next time it got super hot, so I did a full on cleaning by scraping any little bits of rust which had formed under the seal. If this doesn't do it, then I'll need to replace the hose for sure. Good times.
