I need advice on oil pumps.

I'm statring the rebuild on my 86 2.2 non common block, and I was going to replace the oil pump. Would the Melling high volume oil pump be good, or should I go get one from Chrysler? I've heard good and bad about the Melling. I'm trying to be at 300+hp. and going with a Turbos Unleashed deep oil pan.

I've always used mopar without any issues. As long as they're not from China, I'm sure either one will suit your needs just fine.

Check your pump (fsm) and use it if within spec...waste of money otherwise.

Melling mumps are fine. I wouldn't worry about high volume, and I want to say somebody at one point proved that there is no difference.

The best thing you can do, though, is to "blueprint" the pump. Basically "port" the oil feel hole taking the casting flash out of it, and make sure the rotor clearance to the housing and the flatness of the cap are as close to the minimum spec as possible. Do these things and the pump will work a LOT better!

Wasn't there a high pressure relief spring from Mopar Performance way back when? I just rebuilt an original oil pump out of an '85 Turbo I motor and found everything to be in spec according to the FSM. I checked the relief spring free length and it was right on, but I was unable to check the spring tension. Would a higher pressure relief spring be better or worse for a 200-300 HP 2.2 or 2.5?

    Rebuild it.
I bought a few Clevite rebuild kits on ebay. No problems so far.

    From Gary Donovan's site:

On oil pressure, experts recommend 7 to 10 psi of oil pressure for every 1000 rpm of engine usage.

    7 psi + 6000 rpm = 42 psi
    10 psi + 6000 rpm = 60 psi

Do NOT use the Mopar Performance oil pumps! They use 21 hp! That's SEVEN more hp then the stock pump uses! The stock pump has more then enough pressure/volume for any hi-po application.

The stock oil pump for your car is fine, and so is the pick-up after the above modification is performed (for better oiling over 3000 rpm and 3 hp). Mopar had a few different pump/pickup/pan combos over the years and its easy to screw things up in a hurry. Just order a replacement pump for your year/engine and you will do fine.

Yes. And remember, its not necessarily the pump that makes "low" pressure. Its incorrect bearing clearances, incorrect oil, etc that can contribute to it as well.
