1992 Turbo SBEC II Calibration Options

I didn't realize how limited my tuning options would be when I picked up my car - a 92 spirit es turbo five-speed.

I would love to add an intercooler, +40s, three bar map, garrett turbo, etc.; but I am seeing a lock of support on the calibration front (basically just FWD). Plus I know that cores are super-rare and I would hate for my car be be immobile due to a computer failure so messing with it kind of scares me. Who has had experience in this area? Am I best off to leave my mods fairly mild?
