    oil cooler installation

I've got a coolant to oil oil cooler off of a 3.8 minivan I want to install in my omni. My question is, is the hose that comes off of the water pump (goes to the heater core I think?) cooled coolant? I'm going to do the 4th cyl mod at the same time. I have the heater hose version.

Not sure I'd use a coolant type oil cooler, all your doing is transfering more heat to the already taxed out cooling system unless you have a killer rad already installed.

My half clogged completely unshrouded ebay civic radiator with cheap unshrouded fan has no problem cooling in 110 degree weather. I just need to know which heater hose to run through the oil cooler.

When I bought the car the cooling system was open to the elements for years. Tons of rust in the block. The entire drive train is just temporary until I build my 2.2 cb. I'm gonna get a higher quality civic half radiator and build a shroud.

Ahh. I see. I don't want to ask a dumb question, but you're waiting until then to install this oil cooler too, right?

Yeah I think I will. Don't want it to get clogged as well. I will probably do the #4 mod now though.

    Re: oil cooler installation

There is something to be said for an oil/water cooler, as compared to oil/air. You have to ask why the OEMs use them. The biggest risk of an oil/water setup is an oil leak (or worse) from its oil hoses and connections. The risk of such oil hoses or connections is avoided with the oil/water cooler. Meanwhile, the oil/water cooler's additional complication/risk is the equivalent of a heater hose splice. As for the additional load on the radiator, boosting radiator capacity likely is on everyone's list anyway.

I like oil to water coolers because it not only keeps the oil from getting too hot, it also should reach operating temps faster. I have personally never seen an oil cooler fail and have coolant mix with oil. I have seen a radiator fail and trans fluid mix with coolant though.

I can see the 4.0 part now.

I would think the oil heats up faster than the coolant..?

I know that when I start driving my omni, the thermostat opens sooner than the oil pressure drops.

I see it fairly often with diesel engines more than gasoline engines, but it does happen.

    Re: oil cooler installation

I would think the bigger issue would be with space constraints. Typically we all run a bigger oil filter on our cars which puts it close to the radiator. The sandwich style oil cooler takes up more of that space. (Then again rmaybe that is just me because I have an intercooler in front of my radiator which pushes the rad back some.)
