asd relay clicking while van is running.

1989 mini 2.5+.020 over. It will fire right up and run but after about 2 min will shut off. Will start right up and run but the whole time it's running the asd will click randomly until it shuts off. Any ideas would be great

Stock computer? Check the ground at the fuel rail and all other grounds.

HEP's are like ballast resistors...keep one in the glove box with the tools to change it. Do that and you will thank yourself!

Yeah, it's just odd because when I pulled the motor out of the other car it ran fine but when I dropped it in mine it gave me fits.

Ok well it wasn't the hep. I hooked up a scan tool to the van today and was able to pull some codes. One was for the asd relay the other was for the fan relay. I replaced them both and it still wants to stall after running for about 5 min. Also for some reason the fan relay started clicking. So far I have replaced the asd fan relay, smec, fan, and hep with working parts and it's still fighting me.

I found 4 grounds. Pass side motor mount, back of intake, fuel rail and drivers side head. They are all hooked up good so what else am I missing?

Re: asd relay clicking while van is running.

That sounds like you got all the grounds, except the one for the alternator.

The only other thing is to check actual connections for corrosion.

I'd also check the physical wiring harness at the relays to make sure that isn't corroded underneath. I've seen it happen. Also check the bulkhead connector. I've seen those corrode as well. Make sure to look under the rubber boot over the bulkhead. I've seen more than one have issues with corrosion under it.

Use an old high beam headlight to properly check grounds, if they check out, then it sounds like the computer went south.

I replaced the computer. How do you use a headlight to check grounds?

That won't find a bad ground per say, I"ve checked many grounds over the years that tested out fine using a test light, drove the ground with a headlight and you quickly find marginal grounds. The one that stands out for me was a GN years ago, just started doing the headlight trick, had intermittant cutting out, checked everything, all grounds checked out, finally tried the headlight trick and found a loose ground on the block, I could hear it arcing, cleaned, tightened and problem solved.

I used a multi meter. One side on the pos side and the black on the grounds. All of them showed 12.3/12.7

Voltage means squat. It's the resistance you are after. If it would be possible, you really want to know amperage (you could very well blow the fuse on your meter if you try this without a shunt).

I've never used or heard of the "headlight" trick, however it sounds like a very inexpensive and easy way of checking the grounds. I may use it in the future!

I learned about it taking an advanced electrical diagnostic course many years ago. The math is sound, your pulling 15-20 amps thru the ground, using the headlight is a very quick way to verify computer powers and grounds, its one of my first diagnostic tests for driveability issues.

As noted above, first time I used it found a loose ground that a mulimeter showed as good.

Any idea why my fan relay would be clicking?

    - - - Updated - - -

Also, how did you do the headlight trick?

    Bad ground.

Get an hold high beam headlight or buy one, the square or round version, hook up wiring to each terminal, put spade terminals on each end, then I ground mine down so they fit into fuse blocks, then hook one side to ground, the other to any ground you want to test, see how bright it is, simple as that. To check computer powers and grounds, find out what wires do want, unplug computer and then drive each ground at the SMEC 60 way connector. Check power by doing it backwards, one wire to the battery ground, the other testing B+.

So you are hooking the light in series, just like an amp meter?

You can do that find a short to ground but not in this case, you either touch the lead to where the ground is, thus checking the integrity, or you power up the ground using the headlight. You use non of the cars electronics, just basic power and ground.

Re: asd relay clicking while van is running.

Ok dumb question but since I'm not checking for a bad fuse how am I hooking this up? One side on pos battery term and the on where the ground touches the engine?

Re: asd relay clicking while van is running.

Unplug the SMEC connector and for our sake, lets say terminal 1 is a ground, so you will put one lead of the headlight to B+, the other to the battery ground and see how bright it is, now put that ground on terminal 1 of the SMEC connector, compare, if its bright, next ground terminal and so on and so on. To check powers, lets say terminal 2 has B+, so now you'll put one lead on the battery ground or a good ground, the other to the SMEC terminal 2 and see how bright it is. You can also check the block to see how its grounded by again one lead to B+, the other to the block, or fuel rail bolt ground etc.

If you have short to ground, then you simply remove the blown fuse and insert the 2 leads, the bulb takes the load and you can unplug and jiggle wires until you find it, its a cheap timesaver.
